Workers dig a trench along 21st Street & Second Ave. South on Wednesday morning as work begins on the CiTYViLLE BLOCK 121 mixed-use development on Birmingham’s Southside. City officials (including Mayor Langford) and the developer gathered later that afternoon for the ceremony. The development is slated to include 255 apartments and more than 21,000 square feet of retail space, both of which will undoubtedly lead to a transformation of that part of the city.

Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford looks over the city’s new natural gas powered Honda Civic yesterday at a press coinference in front of City Hall. The City of Birmingham announced Monday it will purchase 70 natural gas-fueled refuse and brush trucks. These new trucks will be the largest fleet of natural gas-fueled refuse trucks in the Southeast. By using natural gas-fueled refuse trucks, the city will be able to eliminate 220,000 gallons of diesel fuel usage each year.

According to the Alabama Allergy & Asthma Center yesterday’ spollen count is in the high range with the level hitting 10 on a 12 point scale.
The center offers daily allergy alerts and pollen counts on its website. The information is also available via The Weather Channel’s online home.

Ritz Camera Centers, Inc., which at more than 1,ooo locations in 45 states, presumably makes it the world’s largest camera chain, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection yesterday. Locally, the company operates as Wolf Camera, with six locations in the metro Birmingham area and 10 overall statewide.
Its online component, Ritz Interactive, is a separate company, though the announcement is sure to have an impact on the e-commerce side of things. Ritz Camera Centers serves as the web company’s largest supplier.
They still plan to operate during the restructuring.
