Bell to hold open meeting for young professionals

Birmingham mayor William Bell has announced – via the city’s Twitter account – that he will be holding a meeting with young professionals at Urban Standard on Thursday at 12 p.m. According to the follow-up tweet posted by the city’s public information office, the hope is that those in attendance will be willing to “share your ideas, concerns and vision for the future for Birmingham.”

We’re just happy for the folks at the popular lunchtime spot as they’ll be packed on Thursday with both young professionals interested in sharing what they want for the city showing up and the regular crowd. It will be the second public meeting held by the mayor announced via Twitter since being sworn in last Tuesday.

Community input sought for conservation plan

Do you have any suggestions for what should be included in a community conservation plan for metro Birmingham?

The Freshwater Land Trust would love to hear from you this afternoon, October 19, (beginning at 4 p.m.) at Vulcan Park.

While we’re thinking of it, now may be a good time to make sure you’re aware of the Land Trust’s ARTSCAPE event, taking place in one month at the Avon Theater in Birmingham’s Lakeview district.

Fireworks at the BJCC yesterday

We’ve known for some time (well, some of us have) that Alabama State Representative Mary Moore has wanted City Council representation on the BJCC’s board. Well, yesterday she decided to make those comments again during the BJCC Board meeting and had some words with the city’s current representation on the board, Mayor Larry Langford. Apparently, a lot of words.

There may be a city budget tomorrow (maybe)

It’s somewhat fitting that on Bastille Day, it looks like we’re about to see some fireworks coming from City Hall here in Birmingham, AL. That’s because late last night the Birmingham City Council announced that they would meet with representatives from Mayor Langford’s office to go over their latest budget proposal later today.

They also announced that they would be removing most of the mayor’s initiatives from the draft budget and unanimously not accepting $1 million per councilor in discretionary funding promised to them by Langford during last year’s mayoral campaign. These moves could be because of reports that the tax increases enacted early during Langford’s term have not collected as much as first hoped.

So, you want to join this motley crew of writers? Cool, because we’re going to need a lot more folks like you in the coming year to keep this thing going…

We’re looking for anyone that has a true passion and love for Birmingham, Alabama, its metropolitan area and all that it has to offer. Our submissions section (recently edited – check for the changes) offers a little more information about what we’re looking for in each section – and know that we’re not just looking for writers either. Photographers, video folks, people that like to podcast – all are welcome.

We still can’t pay you yet, and we’re not going to be too picky, though if you could forward us a sample of your writing, photographs and/or videos, that would even be better.

So come on out to Java and Jams (321 20th Street North) buy some coffee and let’s start a conversation in this city.

Obama in B’ham Sunday

Barack Obama in Birmingham Not only is Sen. Barack Obama running television ads in Alabama starting today, The Birmingham News reports that the presidential hopeful will be in town 2 p.m. Sunday.

The Stand For Change Town Hall meeting at UAB’s Bartow Arena is free and open to the public but you’ll need a ticket to get in. Tickets will be available starting 9 a.m. Friday morning at Obama campaign offices. The Birmingham office is located downtown at 1813 4th Ave. North. Offices are also located in Montgomery, Tuscaloosa, Huntsville, Mobile, Selma and Tuskegee.

Doors on Sunday will open at noon. Campaign requests no bags, signs or banners. “I heart Huckabee” tattoos probably not welcomed either.
