On the agenda: One laptop per councilor

In case you missed it yesterday morning, Mayor Langford presented each of the members of the Birmingham City Council with an HP Mini notebook, comple with capability to connect to the Internet using WiFi and an AirCard courtesy of Verizon Wireless. They also received an 8 GB jump drive containing several city reports, including the budget that they are currently working on and a bag to carry it all in; Birmingham Weekly tweeted a description of the embroidered message. A series of classes will be offered for those councilors and city employees that are interested.

The Birmingham News pointed out the total cost of the expenditure in today’s paper, as well as the status of the budget that seems to have encouraged their distribution.

“an Apple Store for health”

These young ladies were taking part in this morning’s Wii bowling tournament at the open house for The Blue Store in Trussville. It’s been described by some as “an Apple Store for health” and I think you’ll agree with that statement when you get there. There’s even an interactive station for checking blood pressure and weight and the ability to access their Be Healthy website.

MyScoop expands into Nashville

bhamscoopFellow Birmingham-based online publication My Scoop announced this morning that they have launched a second site for Nashville, TN. The website launched in 2007 and currently receives 9,426 monthly page visits from the Music City, leading to My Scoop Media, Inc. CEO Amy Lemley Bailey‘s decision to formally expand into Tennessee.

Bailey expressed excitement in the press release announcing the launch of the new website stating that “We are thrilled to provide Nashville with the most current information about fashion, beauty, posh living and entertainment in their area.”

Tour the Lyric this afternoon

The historic Lyric andAlabama Theatres will be open for tours this Sunday afternoon from 2-4 p.m. Historian Dan Liles will be on hand to give the history of the Lyric. Organ crew chief Larry Donaldson will be available to answer questions about Alabama Theatre’s Mighty Wurlitzer pipe organ and the Alabama’s technical director, Jeff Kizziah will be up in the projection booth.

Yeah, Century Plaza is closed

The Birmingham News recently shared the news that Century Plaza had officially closed (save for the Sears location which will still be open through June 14) effective Sunday evening.

NBC 13 provided visitors to their website the chance to read the press release from the mall’s owner, General Growth Properties, distributed yesterday morning while Fox 6 garnered comments from city councilmember Carol Duncan and others, leading us to today’s Magic City Question,

Pro mountain bikers come for South’s finest

picture-1Believe it or not Birmingham is a bicycle-racing town.  If you need proof consider this weekend’s Bump N’ Grind mountain bike race.  Presented by Birmingham Urban Mountain Pedalers (B.U.M.P.), this year’s event marks the fifteenth year that the single track at Oak Mountain State Park has challenged pro and amateur racers from around the country.  This race is arguably the best mountain bike race in the South (as well as the largest), so if you we’re planning a bike ride this weekend Oak Mountain is the place to be. Not only will you get to enjoy the park but you’ll have the treat of catching a glimpse of pro mountain bikers as they rail across the park and through the trails.
