Go shopping for the AEC

Alabama Environmental Council logoIt’s almost lunchtime, so you may be considering where to go for lunch or if you have some time to run some errands. Well if you happen to find yourself at the Whole Foods Market in Mountain Brook (or you’re not sure where to go for lunch, dinner or groceries), 5% of all sales made today out there will go to benefit the Alabama Environmental Council (this also gives you a chance to check out their new website).

Staff and volunteers from the AEC will be on hand to distribute materials (including their brand new stickers) and selling t-shirts among other things. Plus, if you get out there before 3 p.m. you’ll have a chance to drop of e-waste for recycling thanks to the folks at Technical Knock Out.

Milestone Books appears to be closing

Milestone Books logoThe word from Birmingham’s {head}:sub/head is that the Vestavia Hills independent bookstore Milestone Books, open for nearly six years, has announced its intention to close. Owner Linda Brown’s email to patrons (posted in its entirety on the popular book blog maintained by former Terminal contributor Travis Bryant) includes a caveat that led to the choice of words for our headline – if someone is interested in acquiring the assets of the store, they’ve got until January 17 to contact her. Otherwise, the inventory sale begins the following day.

A Festivus gift for one of us

AirCurveWe’ve got this Griffin Technology AirCurve that we’ve been wanting to give away for some time now. The thought of doing it today just seems to make some sense. There’s no form to fill out or need to add your name to a mailing list. We’re just hoping that we’ll get a chance to see you today at The Bottletree.

Some folks are holding a Festivus tweetup this afternoon starting at 3 p.m. at the popular gathering spot and music venue. All we’re requiring is that you seek me out at said event and say “It’s Nice to Have You in Birmingham.”

Help draw Birmingham’s blueprint

Blueprint BirminghamYou don’t have much time left to help the Birmingham Business Alliance draw up a blueprint for The Magic City’s future.

An online survey is now available through tomorrow (December 23) that allows for you to add your voice to this planning initiative. Market Street Services of Atlanta, GA has coordinated the effort that has included focus group meetings with business leaders, area young professionals and others considered key stakeholders in Birmingham’s future. It appears that the final report which will be posted online, demonstrating the transparency that BBA president Dalton Smith spoke of when the new organization launched earlier this year.

Detours abound at Children’s Hospital

Children’s Hospital has just announced that there will be traffic detours as a result of construction on their new facility through January 2, 2010.

Motorists will want to avoid 5th Avenue South between 16th and 17th Streets. We’re assuming that you’ll want to definitely avoid it around evening rush hour – though it is the holidays so traffic may be reduced just enough where it may not affect things that much.

PostSecrets to be revealed at UAB on Thursday

IMG_0583 joelogon/FlickrIf you’re not familiar with the popular blog PostSecret, you may want to click on the link and get acquainted; then you’ll have a reason to be excited about the creator of the site, blogger Frank Warren, being in Birmingham on Thursday evening, October 22.

UAB’s student newspaper, Kaleidoscope, first reported about the lecture, entitled “The Most Trusted Speaker in America: Frank Warren’s ‘PostSecret,’” last week. Warren’s also included the appearance on recent blog posts and in Facebook invitations to his appearances. UAB students get in for free while general admission tickets will be $10.

UPDATE: Fire + Ice COO responds

This morning I received the following message from the COO of Fire + Ice restaurants, Hol Hustus in response to our email to them and yesterday’s post about the status of the Five Points South location:

“Thanks for the e-mail. Unfortunately the restaurant has recently closed. The owners plan on making some changes and re-opening in a few months. We will try to keep you posted through out website and e-mails.

Thanks again.”

Sounds like we’ll know what’s coming next in that spot soon. Thanks to Hol for the prompt reply.
