Election ’09: Douglas joins the race tomorrow

We continue to see more people announcing that they’ll be trying to get the job of Birmingham’s chief executive come December 8. Tomorrow Scott Douglas, the executive director of Greater Birmingham Ministries, will be formally announcing that he’s joining the race for mayor.

Douglas’ campaign website appears to be a placeholder currently, while his campaign’s fan page on Facebook is reporting that his announcement will take place at 10 a.m. at Kelly Ingram Park.

Looks like Bhamwiki will get to add a few more names to their list…

WBHM goes for another One and Done on Thursday

WBHM logo Fans of Birmingham’s public radio station, WBHM, have a couple of reasons to be paying close attention to the station in the coming weeks. First of all, their successful One and Done! fundraising campaign returns this Thursday, October 22. They’re asking supporters to consider making their donations in advance (maybe even online if they’re so inclined).

They’ve also announced changes to their weekday evening and weekend lineup (available for viewing in PDF format) beginning on November 14. Yes, if you’re noticing something too, you may want to check out the frequently asked questions about the changes.

Vote for the Junction… cause it matters

Tuxedo Junction photo The folks over at Main Street Birmingham (MSB) submitted a photo taken in front of the Nixon Building in Birmingham’s Ensley community as one of the 1,900 entries in this year’s National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Places That Matter Photo Contest. The photo is the latest piece in a campaign to raise funds for the renovation of the building into a cultural center for the community and the region.

Yesterday it was announced that the photo was picked to be one of the 12 finalists! You’ve got until October 9 to sign up and vote once-per-day for the photo.

MSB’s got additional instructions on their website as well as a rendering of what the completed project will look like when completed.

Langford wants to “Do the dome…NOW!”

Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford shared his intentions with the audience assembled in The Harbert Center early this morning. He hoped that the Birmingham City Council approves his request to release funds to begin construction of the much-talked about multipurpose facility for the BJCC campus downtown.

Or to put it simply, he’s saying, “Let’s do the dome… NOW!”

Like Father, Like Son

Terminal, Earl Hilliard Jr.

Earl Hilliard Jr. shares a moment with his father and former holder of the 7^th Congressional District seat, Earl Hilliard Sr., at Kelly Ingram Park Monday morning after a press conference announcing the junior Hilliard’s candidacy that seat. Hillard Sr. lost his seat to Artur Davis in 2003 who Hilliard Jr. wants to replace. The senior Hilliard held the seat for 10 years and was the first black congressman from Alabama since reconstruction. Earl Hilliard Jr. is a first term State Rep. and was recently named freshman legislator of the year by the House Democratic Caucus.

Artur joins the Twitterverse

Call us crazy over here, but follow along and see if we’re on the same page as everyone else…

A poll was unveiled on the 26^th by Anzalone-Liszt (and shared via Doc’s Political Parlor yesterday) showed results that favored Congressman Artur Davis as he determines whether or not he may run for governor in 2010. Then this afternoon your favorite neighborhood hub is invited to become a follower of the U.S. Representative’s new Twitter feed.

So we’re just wondering “When this ‘potential’ run becomes an actual one?”
