Sandella’s coming to Birmingham

Sandella's Flatbread Cafe logoNo, we don’t know where the locations will be (or even when they’ll open), but the word is that a local investor has announced plans to open two locations of Sandella’s Flatbread Cafe here in Birmingham, AL next year.

I’d suggest checking out their website to learn more about them (since they’d probably do a much better job than we would).

Tonight’s the Holiday Get Together

I’ve been working on some stuff behind the scenes and away from Birmingham’s hub today, leading to a lapse in posting – and keeping us from reminding folks earlier – but we’re hoping that some of you may be interested in showing up at Speakeasy this evening (1920 3rd Avenue North) for our 2nd annual Holiday Get Together. It just also happens to be Repeal Day (you know you’re interested).

We’ll have a few t-shirts for folks and if you feel like it, you can show up with a non-perishable food or monetary donation for The Community Kitchens of Birmingham (please have checks written out to the organization). We’re not charging a cover or really knowing what to expect; we only wanted a chance to see folks before the end of the year so we hope you’re planning to at least pop in for a second.

If you cannot attend this evening, please consider visiting their website or forwarding their URL to a friend and clicking on the Donate now button.

As always, enjoy the ride and the holidays!

Larry Langford arrested, charged as part of 101-count Federal indictment

Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford, arrested early Monday morning at his job at Birmingham Budweiser, appeared in federal court in leg-irons and pleaded not guilty in federal court as prosecutors outlined a 101-count criminal indictment alleging bribery, conspiracy, fraud, money laundering and filing false income tax returns; he is named in 60 of them.

Langford, with longtime friend and lobbyist Albert LaPierre and Montgomery-based investment banker William Blount, are accused of creating “pay to play” criminal schemes in which they personally and professionally profited from Jefferson County’s billion-dollar sewer bond deals.

Langford was the County Commission president from 2003 to 2007, and oversaw the county’s financial committee. During that time, prosecutors allege Langford got as much as $235,000 from Blount through LaPierre, and that Blount’s firm, Blount Parrish & Co., received $7.1 million in fees from county bond swap transactions.

Birmingham drops down in “dangerous” list

While Birmingham still resides among the top ten most dangerous cities rankings compiled by CQ Press, it has moved down the list. After spending two years at #6, Alabama’s largest city dropped two spaces to #8. The annual list is quite controversial to the point where even the folks who provide the data on which the results are based, the FBI, don’t necessarily agree with it – take a look at how the St. Louis Post-Dispatch covers it for instance (they finished 4th BTW).

Happy Thanksgiving Birmingham!

Best wishes to you and yours on this day of Thanksgiving from Birmingham’s hub – and prayers for those affected by the continuing crisis in Mumbai

We just have one question to ask today, and you can click on it to take you over to Magic City Question to answer if you feel so inclined:

What are you thankful for?

On the hub: New faces and questions

Well, there’s a familiar one in there as well. One thing you’ll no doubt notice as you return from the holiday weekend next week is a couple of changes to the front page so those of you that visit the site regularly know what’s going on elsewhere on The Terminal. However, for the time being:

You’ve got until noon tomorrow to enter for a chance to win tickets to The Duke Spirit show at The Bottletree this weekend;

Terri’s returned and so has In Love With, and just in time for the holidays;

It seems a lot of folks are in love with Josh’s review of Maki Fresh;

and we’re wondering what favorite Thanksgiving dish are you looking forward to having on your table come Thursday?

And we’ll give you two ways to let us know if you’re coming out to Speakeasy on December 5 – Facebook and Upcoming.

City plans inauguration event for Kelly Ingram Park

One point that few people have brought up so far is that the nation will celebrate the 80th anniversary of the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. just one day before it formally swears in its first African-American president (King’s actual birth date is January 15).

Now, considering how difficult it is to find even a one-way ticket to Washington, DC at a reasonable price for the January 20th events (possibly due to early estimates of at least 1 million people already making plans to attend), Birmingham city officials are planning to bring the inauguration to The Magic City – particularly historic Kelly Ingram Park.

This would undoubtedly also bring renewed national focus to the city’s annual events for the slain Civil Rights leader (including the Unity Breakfast). It also doesn’t seem to be nearly as controversial as plans currently underway in San Francisco for a similar event being organized by NextArts.org.
