There’s been a great deal of coverage via our numerous media outlets about this weekend’s Davis Cup tie here in Birmingham, AL. We thought it might be a good idea to take a look at how international media outlets are covering the event. 1,000 DVDs on sale tomorrow downtown

Apparently The Bottletree‘s Brian Teasley will have his entire DVD collection (estimated to be somewhere around 1,000) available for sale tomorrow at What’s on 2nd? at 2306 2nd Avenue North in downtown Birmingham. The sale starts at 11 a.m. with some of the titles available for as little as $5. According to the email that went out earlier this evening, it will be “a virtual horde of great classics, documentaries, tv series, rare British comedy, Criterion collection, and foreign films.”

WordCamp Birmingham 2009 is on!

PhotoMatt @ BlogWorld 2007 OK folks, It’s on; WordCamp Birmingham 2009 that is!

I’m happy to announce a bunch of things related to our second annual conference for WordPress users and bloggers of all ages, currently scheduled for Saturday, September 26. The first WordCamp Birmingham 2009 planning meeting will be next Thursday, March 12, at 11:30 a.m. at o kafés! in Pepper Place. Please let me (André) know if you’re interested in helping plan this year’s edition via email.

I’m also happy to confirm that our keynote speaker will be none other than WordPress’ founding developer (and all around nice guy) Matt Mullenweg, pictured here with his very own black Terminal T back in 2007. Nashville’s Mitch Canter of Studio Nashvegas has also agreed to come back and present.

Finally, we will be launching the WordCamp Birmingham site on The Terminal next Wednesday afternoon.

Be Birmingham contest reopens!

That was the internal name for the “orange sign” contest that we recently attempted. We received one entry for the contest from Rod Needham (that’s it up above), at which time we learned that because of changing servers last week, folks may have found it difficult to submit their entries. BTW, Rod’s submission, which will be uploaded to the set by this afternoon, said that he thinks of “precipitation” when he thinks of Birmingham… You’ll have to read his entry. That said, I figured we’d reopen the contest, starting… NOW! NOTE: It closes on Thursday, March 12, at 5 p.m.

Six are honored for Living the Dream

live-the-dream-logoThe Live the Dream Awards were created in 2003 by the Birmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce to recognize those in Birmingham, AL that have achieved their dreams and who’ve made a positive impact on the region. This year’s class is pretty impressive as it includes “orthopaedic surgeon to the sports world” James Andrews; Grammy winner Emmylou Harris; UAB researcher James McClintock; NFL player DeMeco Ryans; and O2 Ideas owner Shelley Stewart. Civil rights pioneer and entrepreneur A.G. Gaston will receive a lifetime achievement award. 

The awards will be presented during a press conference this evening beginning at 5 p.m. at Burr & Forman’s offices downtown.

CAWBC Scholarship deadline extended

We’ve just received word that the deadline for applications for The Elizabeth Conwell Schlarb Foundation for Women Entrepreneurs‘ Scholarship Fund has been extended until next Friday, March 13 at 5 p.m.

We’ve got some information about the scholarship up from the post announcing the original deadline.
