Got Plans? returns!

jasonpostFor the better part of two months I’ve been promising a return of our most popular column, Got Plans? When Christina signed off in October, we had a lot of folks wondering what we were going to do next. Some have even been going back and rereading old entries just to get their fix for the week. Enter Jason Donaldson (hint, he’s the guy to the left of all of this text).

Today Jason, The Terminal’s newest staff member, sets out to take Got Plans in a different direction and he’s looking for your suggestions as well. Allow Mr. Donaldson to introduce himself to you this morning, and reintroduce you to Got Plans.

Birmingham Wildfire tryouts upcoming

birmingham_wildfire_logoThe Birmingham Wildfire, a semi-professional football team, became a part of the metro Birmingham scene last year. BhamWiki even created an entry for them. This year they’ve signed on to be one of the six teams in the Southern Conference of the LaBelle Community Football League (LCFL), founded in 2003 by music icon Patti LaBelle.

The team will be holding open player tryouts next week Saturday (March 7) and March 21 at Legion Field. Open tryouts for the dance team will be on the 21st. Registration on both days will begin at 9 a.m. with fees being $25 for players and $15 for potential dance team members.

Fox 6 unveils new website

The new look for the WBRC – Fox 6 website appears to be a little more streamlined than its predecessor.

One thing noticeable on under the About Us > Personalities section of the site is the absence of the profiles for Chris Montana, one of the 10 employees that were let go by the Birmingham, AL Fox affiliate late last week. I’ll also say that it was weird not to see morning traffic reporter Brooke Allen’s profile either…

The station’s celebrating its 60th anniversary this year.

UPDATE: The Mayor speaks at the ONB Breakfast Briefing

This morning Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford speaks to a crowded room at the Harbert Center to review progress on various projects taking place in the City. He has already spoken about the loss of common sense in the city as well as the city’s new 3D map, focused on Birmingham’s City Center. There has also been a presentation of the DVD created to make the case for the funding of the Birmingham Zoo’s expansion.

The campaign is centered on us – Birmingham that is.

This year’s effort to make people aware of the festival as it comes of age involves sharing what City Stages means to those that attend it. Dan Monroe of Cayenne Creative explained the concept to a full WorkPlay Theatre this evening.

No, it’s not Pole Position

It is a great new tool available at UAB to help get patients back on the road… It may also help avoid the estimated 4,000 – 8,000 crashes per year caused by distracted drivers as reported by AAA.

Some drivers are dealing with certain types of illnesses or they are elderly. Enter the $100,000 driving simulator at the UAB Driving Assessment Clinic funded in part by the National Institute on Aging.

The interactive simulator allows for patients to be tested for 30 minute sessions using a 130° field of view and giving them an opportunity to experience several different types of driving conditions.

Women entrepreneurs, take note…

The Central Alabama Women’s Business Center (CAWBC) is still accepting applications for the The Elizabeth Conwell Schlarb Foundation for Women Entrepreneurs‘ Scholarship Fund – until this Friday, February 27 at 5:30 p.m.!

The funds are available for those women business owners in Central Alabama who’ve been in business for at least three years. Applicants may use the money to pay for one or more courses at a two or four year college or for entrepreneurial education and professional development.

Applications can be obtained at the CAWBC’s website or by contacting Noelle Gaspard at 205-453-0249 and/or noelle@cawbc.org.
