If you didn’t think Larry was serious…

Readers of The New York Times in the Big Apple woke up on this last morning of the Summer Olympics in Beijing to this overview of Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford’s wanting to bid for the 2020 Olympics (NOTE: registration required to view the full article). Granted, it was on page A17 of the New York edition, but it IS the Sunday New York Times, so folks are going to see it while they’re drinking their coffee and getting ready for the first round of the U.S. Open.

It’s all there, the pros, the cons and a comment or two towards the end that resembles the crux of what I wrote about it back when it was first announced in June.

More coverage in the air

Delta Sky Magazine - Heart of the City

Well, we’ve become quite the popular city to write about. Last year the city enjoyed coverage in Southwest’s in-flight magazine focused on Rickwood Field and the Rickwood Classic. In May, Delta Air Lines published a story about the city in general in May’s Sky Magazine. Luckily, the story is still up on the Internet, so you can see what they wrote about us…

Now you can find out if Cleveland really rocks…

Continental Airlines recently announced that they were starting nonstop service to Cleveland, OH from Birmingham, AL. Well, today’s the official ceremony recognizing the beginning of the service – even though service actually started yesterday. The flights will be operated by ExpressJet flying under the Continental Express flag.

There will be two chances to leave The Magic City daily to check out the Rock & Roll Music Hall of Fame, the Indians and (most importantly for basketball fans) LeBron James and whoever the other team is that’s playing the Cavaliers

… and we get a chance to win over some more converts.

Follow-up: The Tory MEP “goof” aftermath

A few things have happened since we first posted about the error made by Tories representing Birmingham, England. The story for those not familiar with it is that representatives for England’s Second City launched a new website recently. The site included a skyline image… of Birmingham, AL.

We’ve learned that the site was up with the error for some time, at least since January 3 when this post first pointed out the error. UK bloggers have been enjoying pointing out the error, one that representatives are calling “a simple mistake”. What’s interesting to us is that it didn’t get fixed until about an hour after the British blogosphere exploded with posts about it (we luckily got ours up in that hour, just before the image was taken down).

Travelogue: So which Birmingham do the Tory MEPs really represent?

West Midlands Conservative Party website homepage

We do normally start our day out with John’s A Look Back column, (which will make an appearance around 8 a.m. today) but we figured we couldn’t pass up this opportunity to point out something from “across the pond.”

We can thank Tom Watson for pointing out this error on this regional site for the English conservative party.

Travelogue: Houston gets its first taste of Zoë’s

Zoe’s in Houston, Texas

Alison Cook is a writer of a food blog for the Houston Chronicle called Cook’s Tour. She recently had the good fortune of posting a review of the newest location of Zoë’s Kitchen, part of the Birmingham-based restaurant chain’s plans for expansion. Or at least we thought it would be a good fortune.

An interesting take on the food, though we’re wondering just what may happen after they’ve been open for a while and some other folks share their opinions on the newest addition to their scene. It sounded like she may be willing to give them a second look, but you never know…

Travelogue: A tale of access (and laptops)

Lafayette Pro Fiber screenshot

Screenshot from Lafayette Pro Fiber blog

Lafayette Pro Fiber Blog exists to provide a daily dose of information to those that support bringing optical fiber to the residents and businesses of Lafayette Parish in Louisiana using the Lafayette Utilities System. More on that in a little bit. The main reason that we’re mentioning this site is because of the post filed yesterday that uses Birmingham’s recent announcement about the XO laptops that they will be receiving to talk about the wider issue of bridging the digital divide. We normally stay fairly quiet on Sundays but thought you just might be interested in this.

It appears that the battle taking place for a fiber optic network is much greater than what can be explained for the purposes of this post. I’ll just recommend that you take a moment and check out how their effort is going.
