New Sidewalk director search begins

Sidewalk logoThis afternoon Sidewalk supporters received a note via email written by AIMA President Alan Hunter formally announcing the departure of Catherine Pfitzer as executive director of Sidewalk and the launch of a national search for a new executive director. We’d tell you more, but we thought you might like to read the note yourself (it’s in PDF format). Of course, you could also check out the job description too.

Imagicon fills a void

That first year science fiction conference has been replaced by a new first year sci-fi conference, Imagicon. The conference will be a little later than last year’s, taking place March 27-29 at the Sheraton Birmingham at the BJCC.

Their website appears to be receiving constant updates and it sounds like something that wants to be a part of the local scene for some time to come. It’s already got some folks excited, like Nicki.

Sidewalk, Lipstick make changes

While we first heard rumblings about the possible firing of Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival executive director Catherine Pfitzer on Wednesday evening, this post from Wade on Birmingham confirmed it on Saturday morning. Pfitzer had served as the executive director for the organization for approximately two years and had held other positions with the film festival. Wade’s post includes excerpts from the email announcement as well as one from Pfitzer thanking supporters and encouraging them to continue to support the festival. Entries are already being accepted for this year’s edition, scheduled for September 25-27.

The other surprising news this past week was of the shut down of one of Birmingham’s newest magazines, Lipstick, as confirmed on the Media of Birmingham blog. The March issue will be the publication’s last. The entire staff was laid off as of Friday and former editor Tina Hatch reflected on it via her blog.

Everybody won this weekend

There was some beautiful weather with weekend, perfect for those that participated in the 8th running of the Mercedes Marathon & Half Marathon as well as the BE5K race on Saturday. Congratulations to the thousands that participated as well as to all of the winners.

While the official results are not yet posted on the site, you can check out results from previous years and have it bookmarked for when they’re certified. Check out Fox 6’s website for video of children crossing the finish line for the Kid’s Marathon.

Gordon Bell ventured out yesterday morning and took some great images, now available for you to take a look at over in The Gallery.

By the way, if you want to share your photos from race day with the folks here on the site and you’re on Flickr, add them to The Terminal’s Flickr group and we’ll get them up here as soon as possible.

The race is on!

The city’s getting ready for this year’s edition of the Mercedes Marathon, including putting an additional rush on downtown Birmingham’ current road repaving project in time for 10,000 to invade for Sunday. While many participants are looking forward to the less stressful course this year, the changes have led to at least one area church’s changing of its worship schedule. For many though, the causes are definitely worth the inconvenience. If anyone else knows of additional schedule changes for any business or place of worship, share it with us in the comments below.

UPDATE: Is the Heritage Festival returning?

A quick look around the Internet late last night brought up this page of information for folks wondering about the future of the Birmingham Heritage Festival.

Your DC Inaugurational traffic warning

We’re aware that many of you will be watching the Inauguration from your home or from Boutwell Auditorium on January 20. Yours truly will actually be in the Nation’s Capital for the event (along with an estimated 2 million others) attempting to write for both The Terminal and my personal blog. For those of you joining me in traveling up there, a couple of notes. First of all, the folks at The Washington Post have provided this cool map showing where you can’t go with a car from 4 a.m. until 7 p.m. on January 20.

Check out The Post’s Inauguration Central for help with questions and info and look for me here on the Monday morning and over here by mid-afternoon on Tuesday.
