Who’s running for City Council on August 25?

New Birmingham, Alabama logoFolks had until yesterday to qualify for the August 25 municipal elections for Birmingham’s City Council and Board of Education. Runoffs if necessary would take place on October 6. That meant that I’ve spent most of today trying to find out how many of them have a web presence. The results follow below.

We start with the list of candidates running for City Council’s nine (9) representative seats. It starts after the jump.

BTW, no surprise, it’s a long one with 46 people qualifying by the deadline.

Vote for America’s Favorite Farmers Market

marketlogoThe American Farmland Trust is conducting the America’s Favorite Farmers Markets contest and the Pepper Place Farmers Market is on the list to consider from Alabama. They’re inviting folks to “Let the world know you love your local farmers market” by voting. If you want to add any of the other farmers markets in the metro Birmingham area (or the state of Alabama) we think they wouldn’t mind. Plus, you help others know just how many options we’ve got around here too…

JeffCo unveils their new website

Jefferson County Commissioner Sheila Smoot announced the unveiling of the county’s new website earlier today. According to the release, the new website was built entirely in-house by the Program Management Office of the county’s Information Technology department and is the first major upgrade in nearly twenty years. The site is currently under consideration for the Center of Digital Government “Best of the Web” award.

No sales tax holiday from JeffCo this year

This morning the Jefferson County Commission voted 3-1 to opt out of this year’s back to school sales tax holiday, scheduled for August 7-9 (Commissioner Carns was not present for the vote). The commission says that the move would save the county approximately $200,000 and at least seven jobs. The Birmingham News posted a list of cities that will participate in this year’s holiday on Monday; Birmingham has announced that it will be participating this year. The repeal will only affect the collection of the state’s 2% worth of taxes, including the 1% educational tax.

It is interesting to note that yesterday was the deadline to notify whether or not cities or counties in the state would participate. You may also want to check out the list on the state department of revenue website to find out just what items are tax exempt during the holiday.

The Caputo Report changes directions

Caputo Report logoPascal Caputo has served as the vice president of public policy for the Birmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce for nearly two years. For the last seven months he has shared posts on The Caputo Report, a blog that became a valuable tool for the organization in terms of sharing perspectives on Chamber-related issues.

Well, beginning with this post filed on Saturday, the blog is now reflecting only the opinions of Mr. Caputo as he prepares to leave the Chamber in advance of the soon to be reorganized Chamber (their merger with the Metropolitan Development Board will be complete later this summer). He explains what he hopes to continue to do with the blog in the near future. This comes after
