Edwards and McCain now planning Birmingham campaign visits

I guess they felt like they need to do it now that Obama and Huckabee have. Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards now plans to visit Birmingham, AL on Saturday, though we’re still not quite sure about when and where it will be; we’re thinking it should be up here eventually.

On the Republican side, Arizona Senator John McCain will take his turn stumping in the Magic City on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. His event will take place at the Birmingham Sheraton. We’re figuring that he’ll eventually add the date to his online campaign calendar as well.

Don’t forget to register so you can vote February 5

The deadline for folks that are not currently registered to vote in the February 5 election is next Friday, January 25!

You may also want to keep in mind the fact that if you’re not going to be in town on 2.5.2008, you’ll want to have signed up for an absentee ballot by January 31.

Bell enters commission race

William Bell headshot Whether or not the results are challenged in court (as has been indicated by the governor’s office), there will be a notable race for the Jefferson County Commission seat vacated by Larry Langford in order for him to serve as mayor of Birmingham.

Birmingham City Councilor William Bell announced his intentions to seek the seat currently occupied by George Bowman. He’s the sixth person to declare their intention to run in the February 5 special election.

If Bell were to win, there would be an appointment to the City Council until an election was held to name his successor. Want to know more? Check out Kyle’s post on Mixed Media.

Follow-up: The Tory MEP “goof” aftermath

A few things have happened since we first posted about the error made by Tories representing Birmingham, England. The story for those not familiar with it is that representatives for England’s Second City launched a new website recently. The site included a skyline image… of Birmingham, AL.

We’ve learned that the site was up with the error for some time, at least since January 3 when this post first pointed out the error. UK bloggers have been enjoying pointing out the error, one that representatives are calling “a simple mistake”. What’s interesting to us is that it didn’t get fixed until about an hour after the British blogosphere exploded with posts about it (we luckily got ours up in that hour, just before the image was taken down).

The Birmingham News’ account today covers most of the bases, but an interesting account comes from The Sun. We’ll let you comment on your thoughts…

We do normally start our day out with John’s A Look Back column, (which will make an appearance around 8 a.m. today) but we figured we couldn’t pass up this opportunity to point out something from “across the pond.”

We can thank Tom Watson for pointing out this error on this regional site for the English conservative party.
