Wake up with Charles tomorrow morning

If you feel like hitting that snooze bar tomorrow… don’t! You may miss former Terminal contributor (and designer of that orange logo you all like) Charles Buchanan‘s appearance on HGTV’s That’s Clever at 7 a.m. If you miss it then, well, let’s have Charles tell you more about that and other things over on his blog.

We’ve got a list of the artists in and/or from Alabama that have or will be making appearances on the show in the coming weeks over on Timetable. It also gives you an excuse to see what other stories have been hiding out over there from you in recent weeks (with more coming soon).

UPDATE: BBVA Compass announces layoffs

Yep, that’s the word we’ve just received – BBVA Compass will announce plans to lay off nearly 10% of their workforce as early as later today. NOTE: They did announce it today – here’s NBC 13’s account via the Associated Press and The Birmingham News‘ post on their breaking news blog, where they confirm that 200 of the jobs will be lost in the Birmingham area.

We’re awaiting confirmation. It would be a major amount of cuts as well, reportedly 10% reduction in current staff numbers. When the last round of job cuts were announced in late November, the bank was reportedly employing more than 13.000 people across six states.

Sources report that internal emails indicated that 1,200 positions would be eliminated with individual notifications made “over the next couple of weeks.”  Severance and placement services were also offered.

We Have Signal needs us!

If you haven’t seen the APT series We Have Signal… you need to check it out, like now or learn more about it by checking out this post from October. Bham.fm shared a note from series producer Matt Whitson earlier this month – a plea for help as the network’s recent budget cuts does threaten the long-term existence of this music series. One way to help is to head on over to Bottletree tonight to check out the benefit show. And you’re still here on the site because…

Your DC Inaugurational traffic warning

We’re aware that many of you will be watching the Inauguration from your home or from Boutwell Auditorium on January 20. Yours truly will actually be in the Nation’s Capital for the event (along with an estimated 2 million others) attempting to write for both The Terminal and my personal blog. For those of you joining me in traveling up there, a couple of notes. First of all, the folks at The Washington Post have provided this cool map showing where you can’t go with a car from 4 a.m. until 7 p.m. on January 20.

Check out The Post’s Inauguration Central for help with questions and info and look for me here on the Monday morning and over here by mid-afternoon on Tuesday.

Somebody said Girl Scout Cookies…

Many in metro Birmingham and across the country will breathe a collective sigh of relief on January 9 as Girl Scout cookies go on sale. Sure you’ve got until March 7, but you know you’ve been craving Thin Mints for a while now…

Our local Girl Scouts organization has also let us know that there’s yet another option this year for our collective sweet tooths – Dulce de Leche. We figure you’ll have questions, so visit the Girl Scouts of North Central Alabama site to get them answered (plus you’ll learn how this program benefits the young ladies involved). Go ahead and bookmark it too since you know you want to order on Friday…

Johnathan Austin appointed to City Council

The newest face among Birmingham City leadership is now its youngest. A majority of City Councilors voted to appoint 29-year-old Johnathan F. Austin to fill the vacant District 5 seat of William Bell.

Vickii Howell of Birmingham View describes it as “an Obama-like moment when the community organizer and relative political newcomer was chosen from among four other better-known candidates, sworn in and seated within an hour of Tuesday’s vote by Councilors Valerie Abbott, Carol Duncan, Joel Montgomery and President Carole Smitherman.”

She reported that Steven Hoyt and Miriam Witherspoon voted no and Roderick Royal abstained.

You can read more of Vickii’s account of this morning’s events on Birmingham’s View’s News Portal as well as the Birmingham News’ breaking news blog.

A local Tweetup group? Maybe…

A local user of Twitter has taken it upon himself to create a group on Facebook for folks in town who use the popular microblogging service. He’s also called a Tweetup for December 29 at Urban Standard from 4-6 p.m. So if you can escape work early that first day after the Christmas holiday, you may want to go on over, check it out and let us know how it goes.

BTW, We’ll have information about our first Terminally Happy Hour of the New Year (on January 8) available soon – plenty of time to wind down from the long holiday season.
