Davis hosts health care summit tonight

U.S. Representative Artur Davis

U.S. Representative (and Democratic gubernatorial candidate) Artur Davis is staying busy here in Birmingham today. At 2 p.m. he’ll be taking part in a press conference at HUD’s Birmingham Field Office in part to watch HUD Secretary Shaun present a grant award to the City of Birmingham and “…highlight the city’s innovative plans to create jobs and help low-income families with its Recovery Act funds.”

Congressman Davis will then host a health care summit at the Alys Stephens Center beginning at 5:30 p.m. tonight. The folks over at Left in Alabama do a great job of describing the format and give you a glimpse of the opinions out there here in Alabama and nationwide while The Birmingham News gives us a look at Davis’ opinions about the issue.

“an Apple Store for health”

These young ladies were taking part in this morning’s Wii bowling tournament at the open house for The Blue Store in Trussville. It’s been described by some as “an Apple Store for health” and I think you’ll agree with that statement when you get there. There’s even an interactive station for checking blood pressure and weight and the ability to access their Be Healthy website.

CyberKnife comes to Birmingham

 CyberKnife of Birmingham was introduced to The Magic City this morning at Brookwood Medical Center. The press conference for the advanced robotic radiosurgery device was held in its beautifully designed patient-friendly home on Brookwood’s campus. The independent treatment center is associated with Brookwood but open to any and all patients who would benefit from this advanced therapy.

UPDATE: UAB’s Lister Hill Library limits access

Click here to view what its looking like inside of the library during the first day of the new policies – just in time for students to return later this month.

Beginning today, if you are not a UAB student, faculty or staff member, or a student at another area college or university, can’t produce a work or student ID and can’t demonstrate a need for medical information, you will not be able to access UAB’s Lister Hill Library. They’ll also be letting state health or legal professionals in.

There’s no need to worry about not having access to information though. If you don’t fall into one of those categories mentioned earlier and you’re still seeking medical information, you can always visit The Kirklin Clinic’s Patient Resource Library, UAB’s Sterne Library or any of the area’s public libraries for assistance.

According to UAB’s Reporter Online website, the changes are part of an effort “to give the library back to the students.” Considering what they’re studying, we don’t blame them one bit.

A quiet problem no more

Syphilis as a major issue has been affecting Jefferson County since 2002.  In 2006, there were 238 reported cases in Jefferson County alone.  At first, you could pin point the specific areas in Jefferson County that were affected, but now it’s county wide.  Alabama is currently ranked fifth in the nation with cases of syphilis, gonorrhea, and Chlamydia.  Jefferson County has the tenth highest number of recorded cases of syphilis in the country.
