Cable outage in Crestwood, Southside

We’ve just learned via Wade Kwon’s Twitter feed that cable and Internet service in Crestwood has been down since about 1 a.m. this morning. Another Terminal Twitter follower, _colm_, let us know that the Bright House service outage is also affecting sections of Birmingham’s Southside. According to Kwon’s tweet, a line was cut due to a fire on Southside last night, causing the disruption. There’s currently no estimate being provided for when service will be restored.

Century Plaza losing last anchor store

The Birmingham News is reporting that Sears Holdings, Inc. has announced plans to close the Sears location at Century Plaza this spring, citing “business reasons.”

The department store was the last of the major anchor stores that once called the 34-year old mall home.

The announcement was made one day after it was reported that Century Plaza’s owner, Chicago’s General Growth Properties, owes more than $1.2 billion in debt and that they are investigating alternative financing solutions. If they cannot find one, the company may be forced to file for bankruptcy protection.

The location is tentatively set to close on May 31, after which you may find some of the 79 employees at the other Birmingham area locations in Fairfield and at The Galleria.

Huh? What did he say?

smitherman-billboardNormally 10 ten lists are seen as funny (a la David Letterman). I’ve got a feeling that the one that was just published over on a relatively new Birmingham, AL blog, Brown Paper Bag, may lead to a major disagreement between two long time public figures.

An email from the blog’s author, Christopher Mosley, says that the list originated from an email sent by former City Councilor John Katopodis in response to an electronic billboard ad placed by Birmingham City Council president Carole Smitherman asking people a simple question, “What can I do for you?” with her Council office number listed.

Alabama Tea Party shortly in Shelby County

In support of the Nationwide Chicago Tea Party Birmingham will host a conservative Tea Party today between 12-1 p.m. The meetup has  been coordinated on the Top Conservatives on Twitter website,  and will be taking place on Hwy 280 at the beginning of the crest going into Chelsea at the entrance to Eagle Point Neighborhood. Supporters are encouraged to make and bring signs in support of a nationwide protest of “pork spending” in the new bailout stimulus package.

Organizers Zan P. Green and Dorthey Knight say that the meetup will continue as scheduled even with the weather to but to take caution if travel to or from event.

Got Plans? returns!

jasonpostFor the better part of two months I’ve been promising a return of our most popular column, Got Plans? When Christina signed off in October, we had a lot of folks wondering what we were going to do next. Some have even been going back and rereading old entries just to get their fix for the week. Enter Jason Donaldson (hint, he’s the guy to the left of all of this text).

Today Jason, The Terminal’s newest staff member, sets out to take Got Plans in a different direction and he’s looking for your suggestions as well. Allow Mr. Donaldson to introduce himself to you this morning, and reintroduce you to Got Plans.

Birmingham Wildfire tryouts upcoming

birmingham_wildfire_logoThe Birmingham Wildfire, a semi-professional football team, became a part of the metro Birmingham scene last year. BhamWiki even created an entry for them. This year they’ve signed on to be one of the six teams in the Southern Conference of the LaBelle Community Football League (LCFL), founded in 2003 by music icon Patti LaBelle.

The team will be holding open player tryouts next week Saturday (March 7) and March 21 at Legion Field. Open tryouts for the dance team will be on the 21st. Registration on both days will begin at 9 a.m. with fees being $25 for players and $15 for potential dance team members.

Fox 6 unveils new website

The new look for the WBRC – Fox 6 website appears to be a little more streamlined than its predecessor.

One thing noticeable on under the About Us > Personalities section of the site is the absence of the profiles for Chris Montana, one of the 10 employees that were let go by the Birmingham, AL Fox affiliate late last week. I’ll also say that it was weird not to see morning traffic reporter Brooke Allen’s profile either…

The station’s celebrating its 60th anniversary this year.
