Free the Hops bill passed by Alabama State Senate

Visitors trying to Google “Free the Hops” and trying to access their website are currently meeting a 504 error.  We’re thinking it’s because of the traffic being generated by fans of specialty & gourmet beers throughout the state celebrating the passage of HB 373 earlier this afternoon. This afternoon at 2:56 p.m., Free the Hops shared via Twitter words that its supporters have been waiting to hear since it was founded in 2004…

“FREE THE HOPS PASSED! WE DID IT”

The bill was passed while Senator Hank Erwin was outside of the Senate chamber in Montgomery. The bill currently awaits the signature of Governor Riley. The organization’s making a plea on their blog with additional information about the next step in the process.

Pepper Place Market’s 10th year starts Saturday

Franklin Biggs Fans of the Pepper Place Saturday Market already know that their wait is almost over. In less than two days the parking lot for the former Dr. Pepper building in Pepper Place on Birmingham’s Southside will be transformed on Saturday mornings from 7 a.m. – 12 p.m. into an organic farmers market. This year, the farmers market will run for 22 consecutive Saturdays, going through October 10 rain or shine. It will also be celebrating its tenth anniversary. As usual, 2nd Avenue South between 28th and 29th Streets will be blocked off.

This week’s 9 a.m. cooking demonstration will be conducted by Daniel George‘s Chef Daniel Briggs. Maybe he’ll have as much fun as Franklin Biggs did a couple of years ago…

UPDATE: What does “brain drain” mean in Birmingham?

UPDATE: 5.14.2009,  WBHM has posted audio from an interview with Jerry Hartley conducted by their own Andrew Yeager. Their piece also contains additional side notes to the story.

Yesterday’s Five Points South Merchants Association meeting on Birmingham’s Southside apparently became a little “contentious” towards the end as it looks like The J. Clyde owner Jerry Hartley and Mayor Larry Langford appeared to have different opinions about the term “brain drain” and what it means for our region’s future.

I’ve got an opinion and I’ve posted it over on My Birmingham.

We’d love hear your thoughts about whether or not Birmingham’s suffering from a brain drain over on Magic City Question.

bhamcentral.com has launched

bhamcentral.com logoAttendees to this year’s BarCamp Birmingham had the opportunity to hear from Harris Reynolds about the experience of developing and launching a new website in one week – bhamcentral.com. Harris felt the need to explore and provide a solution to the issue of the online community portal.

UPDATE: City Stages 21 makes NY Times list

UPDATE: 5.12 – …and now, the festival’s unveiled their new calendar. More on Timetable.

The first act hasn’t even taken the stage for this summer’s edition of City Stages and it’s already being talked about in The New York Times. Birmingham’s annual summer music festival was the only one from the state of Alabama inclueded in paper’s list of pop music festivals taking place this summer (called appropriately enough, Summer Stages). The list appeared in Sunday’s paper and is the second time in two months that The Magic City makes an appearance on the pages of the paper.

It also helps out that since the list is alphabetical, it’s the first one…

CyberKnife comes to Birmingham

 CyberKnife of Birmingham was introduced to The Magic City this morning at Brookwood Medical Center. The press conference for the advanced robotic radiosurgery device was held in its beautifully designed patient-friendly home on Brookwood’s campus. The independent treatment center is associated with Brookwood but open to any and all patients who would benefit from this advanced therapy.
