101 Ideas for Birmingham? Maybe

101 Birmingham logoTonight will be the first meeting of 101 Birmingham (which should not be confused with the Birmingham 101 website across the pond).

They describe themselves as “an open-source collaborative developing innovative and visionary solutions to improve the urban experience in Birmingham”  that are seeking answers to one question, “Birmingham would be a better place if….”

They hope to produce a list of 101 actual suggestions for improving Birmingham with areas of focus that are similar to those of several organizations that currently exist in the city and share that list online for all to see, collaborate and offer suggestions on. The organizers hope that they can create an environment and a gathering place, virtual or otherwise, to share these ideas openly instead of  “hoarded.”

The meeting will be at Woodrow Hall in the city’s Woodlawn neighborhood starting at 7 p.m. Pavo Magazine has some additional information.

Wanna be a hipster in Birmingham?

Hipster Crowd. E. Bartholomew/Flickr FreeThinkBham has posted a Hipster’s Guide to Birmingham, AL on their website to help transplants… well, let’s use their words:

“I want people new to the Birmingham area or having to move here (god bless you) to have an easy way of finding out where to hang, drink, meet people, whatever.”

They’re inviting folks to comment and add on to their list as well, so how about heading over there and doing just that. It also wouldn’t be fair to not give a hat tip to A Trip Down South for bringing FreeThinkBham’s post to this site’s attention.

Miles College’s interim basketball coach debuts tonight

The men’s basketball team at Miles College will take to the hardwood tonight in Jackson, TN to face Lane College at 7:30 p.m.. There will officially be a new head coach at the reigns for the Golden Bears when that happens.

Will Cotchery. Miles College athleticsThe college announced earlier this week that fourth year head coach Christopher Giles had been released effective immediately. Giles had not coached the team since January 6, when he was suspended for “personnel issues.”

Interim Miles athletic director Dr. Chico Caldwell also announced that Birmingham, AL native Will Cotchery would continue serving as interim head coach until the end of the season and that a search for a permanent replacement would start at that time.

Yes, The First 48 returns to Birmingham tonight

The First 48 logoThe increased amount of searches of the site gave us a good idea that the A&E TV series The First 48 will bring viewers back to Birmingham, AL for tonight’s episode. A reminder was sent out to fans yesterday via Twitter complete with a show description:

“In Birmingham, Detective Chris Anderson returns to his childhood neighborhood to investigate the murder of a man killed over ten pounds of marijuana.”

The first episode aired last February after there was disagreement over whether to allow the popular reality series to film here. Don’t worry if you miss tonight’s episode at 8 p.m. – it’ll air again later on tonight (and whenever they feel like letting it).

U.S. Pipe plant to close in North Birmingham

U.S. Pipe logoThis morning’s started with the announcement from parent company Mueller Water Products that U.S. Pipe will be closing its ductile iron pipe manufacturing plant in Birmingham’s North Birmingham community. The construction of a new facility in Bessemer which uses a new process that increased output and reduced production costs helped lead to this decision.

According to the press release, 260 positions will be eliminated by March 31 of this year helping the company see $6-8 million in savings during fiscal 2010. The production handled by the North Birmingham plant will be shifted to the company’s Bessemer plant as well as a plant in Union City, CA.

Bell to hold open meeting for young professionals

Birmingham, Alabama logoBirmingham mayor William Bell has announced – via the city’s Twitter account – that he will be holding a meeting with young professionals at Urban Standard on Thursday at 12 p.m. According to the follow-up tweet posted by the city’s public information office, the hope is that those in attendance will be willing to “share your ideas, concerns and vision for the future for Birmingham.”

We’re just happy for the folks at the popular lunchtime spot as they’ll be packed on Thursday with both young professionals interested in sharing what they want for the city showing up and the regular crowd. It will be the second public meeting held by the mayor announced via Twitter since being sworn in last Tuesday.

Dreaming about across the street from Railroad Park

TRO JB 1st ave pers There seems to be a growing  number of people interested in the suggested development proposals presented at last week’s Operation New Birmingham breakfast briefing.

For those of you who did not see yesterday’s piece in The Birmingham News or the reader’s poll on AL.com, the elevations created by Erdreich Architecture, The Garrison Barrett Group, Cohen Carnaggio Reynolds, Sims Architectural Studio, TRO Jung|Brannen and Williams-Blackstock Architects were presented for a vote – but the elevations only tell part of the story.

Each proposal envisioned the types of businesses that could be included and tried to work in the results of a compact agreed to by property owners and developers months earlier (including ensuring that parking was handled inside of the block. The proposals are just that – ways to visualize what is possible before going to the next step. We invite you to check out all of the proposals submitted and share your thoughts.
