Stitt, McCrary, James join Academy of Honor

Three Birmingham area residents are in pretty select company.

Yesterday Alabama Power CEO Charles McCrary, Vulcan Materials CEO Donald James and Birmingham restaurateur Frank Stitt were among five individuals inducted into the Alabama Academy of Honor during a ceremony in the old House chamber at the Alabama Capitol.

According to the Associated Press report, “…membership in the academy is limited by law to 100 people whose accomplishments and service have greatly benefited the state.”

Community input sought for conservation plan

Freshwater Land Trust logoDo you have any suggestions for what should be included in a community conservation plan for metro Birmingham?

The Freshwater Land Trust would love to hear from you this afternoon, October 19, (beginning at 4 p.m.) at Vulcan Park.

While we’re thinking of it, now may be a good time to make sure you’re aware of the Land Trust’s ARTSCAPE event, taking place in one month at the Avon Theater in Birmingham’s Lakeview district.

UPDATE: A trial free zone starting Monday

I figured that would get your attention here on a Friday afternoon as you’re getting ready to enjoy a mostly rain-free weekend.

I thought you’d like it if we told you now instead of waiting until Monday to do so…

There are no plans to post anything – and I mean ANYTHING – about the pending Federal trial of Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford – until a conclusion to the matter is determined. Well, except for the piece I’ll post tomorrow morning that was posted early Saturday afternoon explaining why. (We’ll link to it from here).

Enjoy your Friday!

UPDATE: Fice and Ice under wraps, for now

Fire and Ice under wraps. Andre Natta/bhamterminal.com

We’re really not weren’t sure what the deal is was ourselves. There’d been a lot of searches recently including the words “Fire and Ice“, “Birmingham” and “what happened” bringing folks to the website so we headed over to Five Points South where we took the above photo.

The windows were covered in paper though there were no signs explaining what was going on. Comments to the restaurant’s fan page on Facebook suggest that this has been the case since October 10. Emails have been sent to the local corporate offices with no answer or voicemail available when phoned. The restaurant opened in March of 2008.

What we did learn was that the restaurant is having improvements made that should be complete in time for a December reopening, so those who enjoy the restaurant shouldn’t be worried about them closing.

Why change the South’s largest magazine?

Southern Living's October 2009 cover. That’s a question that readers and former employees of Time Inc.’s Southern Progress Corporation‘s Southern Living magazine have probably been asking for a while now. The new look of “the South’s largest magazine” was unveiled via mailboxes and newsstands recently.

One other major change for the magazine recently; for the first time in SL’s history, the editor in chief is a woman. Eleanor Griffin’s got one goal in mind according to an interview recently conducted by Samir Husni, director of the Magazine Innovation Center at the University of Mississippi, School of Journalism – staying Southern.

Check out the full interview with Eleanor Griffin, where she answers some pressing questions, on Husni’s website, Mr. Magazine.
