Larry’s latest suggestion is unveiled; thoughts?

We’re going to ask you about your thoughts on Larry’s latest plan for today’s Magic City Question

No, we’re not talking about the planned renovations to City Hall for compliance with ADA access, or the suggestion that we purchase the sewer system if the county declares bankruptcy (oh, wait, that was Councilor Hoyt‘s idea); or for your feedback about yesterday’s day off for all city employees (that many in the city were not aware of) because some came in to work during successful efforts to accomodate evacuees  from Hurricane Gustav on Labor Day (though we’d planned to ask that question).

Nope, today’s question has to do with plans for new plazas with fountains throughout the city. We figured you’d want to share your thoughts with us over there

Cousin Cliff is gone

Mike Royer made the announcement at the beginning of last night’s 10 p.m. news broadcast on NBC 13 with The Birmingham News and edits to his BhamWiki entry following suit as the news began to spread across The Magic City – James Clifton “Cousin Cliff” Holman, Jr passed away early yesterday evening in Albertville, AL. Check out the BhamWiki entry or the special report filed by News reporter Bob Carlton in July to share your memories. You’ll also want to visit Birmingham Rewound for more history (and images) of a true legend.

Steve’s last day is Oct. 3

It won’t exactly be the same when you hear Steve Chiotakis‘ voice on the radio after October 3 – mainly because he’ll be ending his reports saying “Marketplace” instead of “WBHM.”

The local host of NPR’s Morning Edition (serving as a companion to many drivers during their commutes) and reporter for our local public radio station is leaving Birmingham to become a reporter for the Marketplace Morning Report, produced out of Los Angeles. The folks at 90.3 FM have an announcement about his departure up on their site. Plus, you may want to check out Steve’s personal site (the first link) in case you’re looking to buy…

AJU supports larger study of tuition spiral

Andrew Jackson University has made several big splashes in recent months. The wholly online institution of higher learning recently announced a plan that would eventually do away with students having to pay tuition costs for students. The university has now added rather vocal support of Republican presidential candidate John McCain’s expanded look into the tuition spiral (it looks like there’s already been a lot of research begun on the topic by our government agencies while searching, here’s one example).

Actually if you scroll down the page (which Andrew Jackson is currently on as well), you’ll see that it’s become a buzz word recently. We’d normally reserve this for that other section of the site, but we’re wondering what do you think – about the announcement and the problem as it affects us as a whole?

Random Shots: An evening in the Gardens

The Birmingham Botanical Gardens hosted their first Cocktails in the Gardens mixer Thursday night in the Hill Garden. The “see-and-be-seen” (the Gardens’ words) event featured hors d’oeuvres and drinks catered by A Social Affair.

The after hours events are an effort to raise awareness among young professionals about membership and other opportunities at the gardens. There are two more this year on October 23 and  November 13.  Their website provides additional information about the series.

Your gameplan for the weekend awaits

Now that football season has OFFICIALLY started (we know with all the recruiting, practice and magazine articles, football here never really goes away), you may think there is no other game in town. And while the schedule has thinned a bit, there is some competition for your time. Don’t drop the ball, find your game plan over on the Timetable. Where I promise you will find no more sports references, really.

Facebook friends unite!

The United Way of Central Alabama has launched a new group on Facebook and they want you to join and help them spread the word.

It is a Causes page that is part of this year’s annual campaign. They’re trying to bolster the number of members in part because tomorrow they’re asking their followers on Facebook to change their profile image in an effort to make even more folks aware of their efforts. We’re looking into doing some redecorating ourselves for the day. Head on over and check it out!
