Stephen Black’s been busy

It’s safe to say that most of our readers probably don’t know who Stephen Black is. That’s fine, since the Anniston Star has just published a great profile of the director of the Center of Ethics and Social Responsibility at the University of Alabama and president and founder of Impact Alabama. Back in November, Black was one of ten recipients of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation National Community Health Leaders Award for the development of the FocusFirst program, leading to additional coverage. You can find out how you can assist with any of the organization’s programs.

Tonight’s the Holiday Get Together

I’ve been working on some stuff behind the scenes and away from Birmingham’s hub today, leading to a lapse in posting – and keeping us from reminding folks earlier – but we’re hoping that some of you may be interested in showing up at Speakeasy this evening (1920 3rd Avenue North) for our 2nd annual Holiday Get Together. It just also happens to be Repeal Day (you know you’re interested).

We’ll have a few t-shirts for folks and if you feel like it, you can show up with a non-perishable food or monetary donation for The Community Kitchens of Birmingham (please have checks written out to the organization). We’re not charging a cover or really knowing what to expect; we only wanted a chance to see folks before the end of the year so we hope you’re planning to at least pop in for a second.

If you cannot attend this evening, please consider visiting their website or forwarding their URL to a friend and clicking on the Donate now button.

As always, enjoy the ride and the holidays!

On the hub: New faces and questions

Well, there’s a familiar one in there as well. One thing you’ll no doubt notice as you return from the holiday weekend next week is a couple of changes to the front page so those of you that visit the site regularly know what’s going on elsewhere on The Terminal. However, for the time being:

You’ve got until noon tomorrow to enter for a chance to win tickets to The Duke Spirit show at The Bottletree this weekend;

Terri’s returned and so has In Love With, and just in time for the holidays;

It seems a lot of folks are in love with Josh’s review of Maki Fresh;

and we’re wondering what favorite Thanksgiving dish are you looking forward to having on your table come Thursday?

And we’ll give you two ways to let us know if you’re coming out to Speakeasy on December 5 – Facebook and Upcoming.

City plans inauguration event for Kelly Ingram Park

One point that few people have brought up so far is that the nation will celebrate the 80th anniversary of the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. just one day before it formally swears in its first African-American president (King’s actual birth date is January 15).

Now, considering how difficult it is to find even a one-way ticket to Washington, DC at a reasonable price for the January 20th events (possibly due to early estimates of at least 1 million people already making plans to attend), Birmingham city officials are planning to bring the inauguration to The Magic City – particularly historic Kelly Ingram Park.

This would undoubtedly also bring renewed national focus to the city’s annual events for the slain Civil Rights leader (including the Unity Breakfast). It also doesn’t seem to be nearly as controversial as plans currently underway in San Francisco for a similar event being organized by NextArts.org.

On the agenda: Honoring and supporting

The easiest items to pass on today’s City Council agenda involve the honoring of two local leaders by renaming portions of streets. Item 4 will rename 8th Avenue North from Center Street to 34th Street North for Rev. Abraham Woods, while Item 5 will rename the portion of 20th Street in front of City Hall for former city councilwoman Nina Miglionico.

There will also be a chance to create what’s essentially an expanded effort to preserve the city’s Civil Rights history (Item 7), though this morning’s interesting item #8, which says that the council supports the lawsuit filed on behalf of the city by Johnson and Walker, LLC “pursuing claims arising out of unfair, deceptive and discriminatory lending activities that resulted in foreclosures and other hardships” for residents.

Five councilors already support it, so it may not necessarily be that much of a deal, but you never know…

Where to watch Election night returns in Birmingham

I’ve been spending most of the day moving (after waiting in line to vote early this morning), so I’ve actually avoided most of the last minute politicizing. It also looks like I’ll be spending the evening unpacking the house (and settling into The Terminal’s new offices), but you… you have options.

Here are just a few choices after the jump.

Sweet reasons to vote

It’s our civic duty. One that we at the Terminal highly encourage. And while it feels good to be a part of the political process, there’s a better reason to vote today — yummy ice cream.

So grab your “I Voted” sticker and proudly wear it to either The Summit or Patton Creek locations of Ben & Jerry’s from 5-8 p.m. for your free scoop. Both locations are participating in the giveaway. Earlier in the day, you can get a free tall cup of joe from Starbucks. Then drive over to Krispy Kreme for a free star-shaped doughnut to enjoy with that coffee. Now, the guy we spoke to at the Hoover location say he didn’t think they were participating, but the guy at the 1st Avenue North location said the offer is being made at all stores. So sure bets are East Lake and Midfield. Enjoy!
