Today’s my Birmingham guest blogger: Barry Copeland

Barry Copeland - Bob Farley/f8PhotoBirmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce executive vice president Barry Copeland gave a very uplifting talk to the Hoover Area Chamber of Commerce in mid-March asking people to take a look at all of the positive things taking place in Birmingham and the surrounding area.

Of course, we’re always happy with folks that take that approach to looking at things, so we decided that he would be a great person to formally begin our guest blogger series over on my Birmingham (go on, check out the post).

What we didn’t know was how much of an effect asking Barry to write would have (though we doubt we can take that much credit for it). We’re pretty happy with the result ourselves.

Tax Day 2008: What to do?

1040 Fest adNo, we don’t ask that question in complete jest; it is one of the busiest days of the year for post offices across the country, including Birmingham’s downtown location. If you need to escape the insanity of filing those last minute returns, 1040 Fest may be your answer. This event is now in its fourth year and will take place across the street from the downtown office beginning at 4 p.m. (you’ve got until 10:40 p.m. to get there). Click on the image to view a larger poster for details.

The Birmingham News’ breaking news blog has posted a map showing where people will be standing outside of the main branch to collect last minute filings from area residents. If you really don’t have to go to the post office, you may want to find an alternate route to head home.

Water restrictions relaxed in Birmingham

The Birmingham Water Works board has relaxed the Birmingham metropolitan area’s drought status to Stage 1, meaning that water restrictions will now be voluntary and fines will not be levied on those that choose not to participate. The utility made the announcement via a press release earlier today that was published by Fox 6 on their website. As of the time of this posting, the release had not been made available on the Water Works’ website.

The announcement comes nearly a week after the utility announced changes to their drought management plan. The changes were the result of suggestions made during the drought summit as well as others made by customers. The long term threat is still not over as the U.S. Drought Monitor still lists the utility’s service area as one in extreme conditions.

We figured we’d save this story for today as a way to warm up. The Seven Springs Ecoscape was officially dedicated yesterday during a mid-afternoon ceremony that included attendance by Birmingham City Councilors Miriam Witherspoon (it is located in her district) and Valerie Abbott.
