Magic City Question: So Idol starts tonight… you gonna watch?

That would seem to be the $1 million question. The two-hour premiere will no doubt get some viewers, but we want to know if the home of Idols will watch this season? One person’s opinion is that American Idol has finally jumped the shark

Random Shots: A new location for FedEx/Kinko’s

New Fed Ex location downtown

There may be a few folks that are wondering where their downtown FedEx Kinko’s store is? Well, it’s just opened this morning at 312 20th Street North in Birmingham’s city center. For those new to the situation, they were the last tenants on the block that’s been slated for redevelopment by Corporate Realty as apartments.

Their former neighbors have all found new locations in the greater downtown area as well, including Reed Books on 2nd Avenue North, Scott’s Koneys (now on 21st Street South). And yes, we’d argue that the new payment center for the Birmingham Water Works on 1st Avenue North is at least pretty close to downtown (it’s even got drive-thru lanes).

One of the interesting things to do is to take a look at what others are saying about our new mayoral administration so far, particularly about this week’s vote. Here’s just a sampling from around our local blogosphere:

Einstein Bros. joins the national chain mix

Einstein Bros. LogoAdd Einstein Bros. Bagels to the list of national chains that have announced plans to put locations in Birmingham. It was announced as part of the company’s plan to offer franchising opportunities in seven states, the Birmingham Business Journal shared the news last week. They join Dunkin Donuts (story) and Baskin Robbins (story) in terms of recent announcements, not to mention several other chains that have opened in recent months throughout our metro area.

This map shows the states being targeted by the Lakewood, CO-based company. Thanks to Megabeth for pointing it out.

This news leads us to a question: What other retail chains would you like to see come to Birmingham? (question edited to clarify meaning)
