Coworking’s catching on in Birmingham

Birmingham Jelly. Todd Sundsted/FlickrThe coworking movement seems to be picking up steam here in metro Birmingham. It’s a fairly loose and casual way to get together and work. This week you’ve got two chances to venture out to Homewood’s Cool Beans Coffee House (recently purchased by the owners of downtown Birmingham’s Java and Jams) to work with others. Thursday morning you can head over and work with Coworking Birmingham starting at 9 a.m.; on Friday, you can head on over there and work all day with “members” of Birmingham Jelly starting at 10. While the first group meets occasionally, the Birmingham Jelly meets weekly. Both groups maintain presence on Facebook, so you can always start to follow them to know what’s next.

TechBirmingham’s new virtual home

For those in the city’s ever emerging Tech community some folks have wondered about the current status of TechBirmingham. Well, the non-profit entity has relaunched their website this morning. It’s been set up to be “a front door to our technology community and to give everyone an opportunity to learn more about TechBirmingham’s many initiatives.”So go on over and check it out.

Incidentally, you may want to see if you can still sign up for this year’s TechMixer University on August 19, the largest technology event ever in the state of Alabama…

See what the buzz is all about…

This morning’s Birmingham News highlights a workaround for the popular video game Rock Band that allows anyone using a wheelchair to fully engage in (and enjoy) the game.

We figured it would be cool to let y’all watch a video demonstrating modification made to the game by Brittany Raymond in action:

We thought you’d also like to see Jeremy’s original post from May 30 too.

Citywide WiFi still on the radar

Wifi Rest Stop - brionv/FlickrOne of the projects announced early on by Mayor Langford’s administration was the goal to have Birmingham, AL covered with wireless Internet access (making us the first major city in the United States truly able to make that claim). Now, while the metro area has several hotspots areas already (more than 343 – send in others if you see them), there’s always room for more. That’s where negotiations with Bright House Networks enter the picture, though according to this ABC 33/40 posting, it may not be exactly what the mayor was hoping for either…

Can you Shut Down for a Day? Find out tomorrow

Speaking of computers, can you go an entire day without turning yours on? Well, we here at The Terminal are going to try to accomplish just that (with try being the operative word) …

Tomorrow is Shutdown Day, where several thousand people are participating in a great experiment – whether or not they can go for the entire day without using their computer. We’ve become a little dependent on them in recent years (we know we wouldn’t exist if you didn’t depend on them for some things). We normally don’t post on Saturdays anyway but this time we just won’t be checking the site either. We’ll do our best to lock it down before midnight tonight – though we may program one post for tomorrow for those of you that just can’t resist…

But we were wondering, can you shut down and be completely connected for a day (and what would you do?) We’ve read about one guy that can’t, but maybe he’s got a good reason. Besides, we do have a fire breathing dragon to go check out…

NBC 13’s on Twitter

The Birmingham Twitterati is all abuzz with word that NBC 13 has joined the world of Twitter.

It looks like it’s part of a larger plan to have all NBC affiliates on the service.

They are not the first service online – that honor goes to The Birmingham News, who we believe has been using the service since last November.

Don’t forget you can follow us too – @bhamterminal.

SxDS: It’s on!

SxDS logoWe’ve just learned that SxDS is going to happen September 26 – 28 here in Birmingham, Alabama. There will also be a WordCamp rolled into the event; it would be the first WordCamp in the Southeastern United States. Yeah, that’s on top of already having the Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival that same weekend (it’s 10th!). The announcements will appear on their sites at approximately 2:30 p.m. CDT.

More details to follow, but for now check out their official website or follow them on Twitter. You can also sign up to assist with the WordCamp through its Google Group.
