Join Stephen’s 5K team in February

wambheaderStephen Vinson started Who Ate My Blog? in February of this year. The purpose of the blog is simple – a friend challenged him to lose 300 pounds between February of this year and April of 2010. If he’s successful, his friend has promised him an all-expense paid trip to the Talladega 500 (complete with limo).

One of Stephen’s goals is to walk a 5K; he’s chosen to participate in the 2010 BE&K 5K benefiting Kid One Transport. He’s even saying that there may even be some t-shirts made up for those willing to be part of the WhoAteMyBlog.com team… Leave a comment on his post and let him know if you’re interested.

The Bottletree Bailout is born!

For those that visited the site this weekend, the post at the top of the page best summed up my thoughts about the situation involving  The Bottletree and City Stages. So of course the next question was, what else to do besides asking folks to go. The answer is simple -> ask them to come out!

We’re calling a Terminally Happy Hour for this Thursday, July 2 – only this time it’s a Bottletree Bailout! We’re asking all of you that see this (and your friends) to come out to The Bottletree whenever you can during happy hour on Thursday – we’ll be getting there at around 4 p.m. – and enjoy meeting people from elsewhere in metro Birmingham while providing business for a venue that’s done a lot for us.

Help bring Happyness to Birmingham in September

gardnerchristopherA large crowd turned out to watch the advance screening of The Pursuit of Happyness at the Alabama Theatre in December 2006 to help support The Firehouse Shelter. Well, now you have a chance to help bring the film’s subject, Christopher Gardner, to Birmingham on September 3 as the keynote for the United Way’s campaign kickoff!

Keppler Speakers is giving away a keynote speech by Gardner with all expenses paid to one lucky organization to help celebrate the launch of his new book and we’ve got until the end of today (June 15) to help the United Way of Central Alabama be that organization.

Find out how after the jump.

What will Birmingham’s aha moment be?

ahamomentWe’ll get the answer to that question next week as the Mutual of Omaha aha Moment tour visits Birmingham beginning June 1. The tour is focusing on the aha moment, defined by the tour organizers as “…a moment of clarity… a defining moment where you gain real wisdom – wisdom you can use to change your life.” They have been traveling the country recording recollections of those inspirational moments, sharing them online for all the world to see. The tour will be set up downtown in front of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame on June 2 beginning at 12 p.m.

After you’ve checked out what some of the other aha moments have been and the official blog, you may be interested in signing up to record your own aha moment while they’re visiting the Magic City. You can always meet the crew too.

Have some green eggs and ham this morning

greeneggshamIf you’re close to Regions Center Plaza this morning between 7 and 9:30 a.m., you might be tempted to stop on by for breakfast, courtesy of Culinard, the Culinary Institute of Virginia College. Breakfast wraps will be served with coffee provided by Crestwood Coffee Company for $10 to help raise funds for the Green Resource Center for Alabama (GRCA). FYI, GRCA’s mission is to promote sustainable social, economic and environmental practices. You can drive-thru or walk up at the corner of 20th Street and 5th Avenue North.

If you feel one of those Fridays coming on, you can also get a chair massage for $5. Think of it as a relaxing way to get to work late for a good reason…

Five years of making a change in Birmingham

Treasure Arts receives Birmingham Change Fund grantLast night, four area nonprofits became the latest recipients of funds from the Birmingham Change Fund. The BCF has existed since 2004, consisting of  “young professionals who desired to improve the quality of life of African Americans in their community.”

Pathways, Need a Chance, Treasure Arts and the Birmingham Urban League Young Professionals collectively received $5,500 during a reception at Events by LaNetta in downtown Birmingham to be used towards doing just that – the result of those young professionals forming a giving circle with support from Hindsight Consulting and the Ford Foundation. The special purpose fund is maintained at the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham.

The image above shows representatives from Treasure Arts receiving their grant. Check back later this evening for photos of the recipients at yesterday’s ceremony.
