Stocking East Lake for a rodeo this weekend

Stocking East Lake for 2011 Fishing RodeoNo, this photo doesn’t catch a catfish sliding into East Lake Park‘s namesake early Wednesday afternoon. There were several folks present though who did see several fish dive in as the lake was stocked for Birmingham’s 14th annual Family Fishing Rodeo this Saturday, June 4. They were delivered by Stearn’s Fish Farm of Wetumpka, AL.

It’s the largest community fishing event in the state, drawing thousands to Birmingham’s eastern area. It’s also an opportunity to participate in giveaways and learn more about local non-profits and community organizations. It’ll take place from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m.

If you want a better idea of what it looks like when you load a few thousand pounds of fish into a city lake, check out this video via al.com from last year’s stocking.

The Bottletree Bailout is born!

For those that visited the site this weekend, the post at the top of the page best summed up my thoughts about the situation involving  The Bottletree and City Stages. So of course the next question was, what else to do besides asking folks to go. The answer is simple -> ask them to come out!

We’re calling a Terminally Happy Hour for this Thursday, July 2 – only this time it’s a Bottletree Bailout! We’re asking all of you that see this (and your friends) to come out to The Bottletree whenever you can during happy hour on Thursday – we’ll be getting there at around 4 p.m. – and enjoy meeting people from elsewhere in metro Birmingham while providing business for a venue that’s done a lot for us.

Dig for plants tomorrow

It’s time for the annual (FREE!) Plant Dig presented by the Keep Birmingham Beautiful Commission. I’d try to write a really cool description of the event, but Christina probably did it best when she wrote up last year’s event – including (basic) directions. It’ll be warmer too. The fun’s from 12-4 p.m. at the New Georgia landfill.

Honoring our servicemen today

A reminder that Birmingham hosts the nation’s largest and oldest Veteran’s Day Parade this afternoon (Tuesday) in the city center. It will begin at 1:30 p.m.

We don’t have a pretty graphic showing you the route, but John Morse has created a parade route map for you with Google Maps and the official parade (and celebration) website has turn for turn directions for you to check out. Thanks to all of our armed forces, past and present, for all that they do.
