Vote for America’s Favorite Farmers Market

marketlogoThe American Farmland Trust is conducting the America’s Favorite Farmers Markets contest and the Pepper Place Farmers Market is on the list to consider from Alabama. They’re inviting folks to “Let the world know you love your local farmers market” by voting. If you want to add any of the other farmers markets in the metro Birmingham area (or the state of Alabama) we think they wouldn’t mind. Plus, you help others know just how many options we’ve got around here too…

How crooked is Birmingham?

Local blogger Wade Kwon is tackling this question via a month-long series on Wade on Birmingham, taking a look at some of Birmingham’s Biggest Crooks. The site describes the series as “a celebration of Birmingham’s most notorious crooks, whether they be liars, thieves, extortionists, swindlers or thugs.” If you’re in love with RSS feeds, you can even subscribe to one just to follow along.

The series’ calendar ends on August 31, the same day that Birmingham’s mayor, Larry Langford, is scheduled to go on trial on federal bribery and conspiracy charges.

JeffCo unveils their new website

Jefferson County Commissioner Sheila Smoot announced the unveiling of the county’s new website earlier today. According to the release, the new website was built entirely in-house by the Program Management Office of the county’s Information Technology department and is the first major upgrade in nearly twenty years. The site is currently under consideration for the Center of Digital Government “Best of the Web” award.

WordCamp Birmingham, Social South launch websites

We’ve been silent for the past few days (well, we were saying stuff on Twitter, but for the most part that means that we’ve been silent for the past few days…).

WordCamp Birmingham logoOur reason for silence – the launching of the new WordCamp Birmingham website just in time to open registration (complete with an early bird discount) and announce a call for speakers and sponsors for September 26 & 27. We’re still wondering if Matt Mullenweg will choose to wear his black Terminal T while he’s presenting, but we’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime, head on over and check it out.

FYI, Social South also unveiled its site last week. The first edition of this social media conference will take place here in The Magic City on August 21 & 22. They’ve also announced an early bird registration fee.

The Caputo Report changes directions

Caputo Report logoPascal Caputo has served as the vice president of public policy for the Birmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce for nearly two years. For the last seven months he has shared posts on The Caputo Report, a blog that became a valuable tool for the organization in terms of sharing perspectives on Chamber-related issues.

Well, beginning with this post filed on Saturday, the blog is now reflecting only the opinions of Mr. Caputo as he prepares to leave the Chamber in advance of the soon to be reorganized Chamber (their merger with the Metropolitan Development Board will be complete later this summer). A Smart Directory for teachers

Smart Directory logoThe Cultural Alliance of Greater Birmingham has recently launched a new directory for educational programs in the greater Birmingham area. The Smart Directory includes listings of in-school presentations, off-site programs and field trips and links to other useful resources for our community’s teachers – and those just interested in seeing all that we have available to us in the area.

MyScoop expands into Nashville

bhamscoopFellow Birmingham-based online publication My Scoop announced this morning that they have launched a second site for Nashville, TN. The website launched in 2007 and currently receives 9,426 monthly page visits from the Music City, leading to My Scoop Media, Inc. CEO Amy Lemley Bailey‘s decision to formally expand into Tennessee.

Bailey expressed excitement in the press release announcing the launch of the new website stating that “We are thrilled to provide Nashville with the most current information about fashion, beauty, posh living and entertainment in their area.”
