2007 Drought: A way to save your plants

Despite the recent increase in area rainfall (and the discussion about how it might have come to be), there is still a great deal of time before we see an end to Birmingham’s extreme drought. Some of our residents are becoming increasingly creative with how they plan to save their outdoor plants. One example can be found over at My Tiny Kingdom as Anne explores how she can save her plants while still being mindful of the conditions around her.

Universoul Circus, Alabama State Fairgrounds

Celebrating its thirteenth year of entertaining enthusiastic crowds and showcasing talent of African descent, the Universoul Circus comes to town this weekend at the Alabama State Fairgrounds on the city’s west side for four days of performances.

There will be nine performances in all.and tickets may be purchased online through Ticketmaster. Go on out and enjoy the action under the big top!

Rock the Town Red (benefit), Bottletree Cafe

They’ve created a MySpace profile and have been getting the attention of bloggers around the metropolitan area. This show will benefit Birmingham AIDS Outreach (BAO), providing assistance to HIV+ individuals and their families which includes counseling, medical assistance, transportation services, medications, legal services, and community prevention. BAO’s mission is "to enhance the quality of life for people and families living with HIV and AIDS and to prevent further spread of the disease through age-appropriate prevention education programs."

Nowhere Squares, Alright Lights, The Maisleys, & d. Mangione as Josephine Sweet all plan to perform at Bottletree (click to purchase tickets in advance), recently included in Birmingham Magazine’s Hot List, beginning at 8:30 p.m. The doors will open at 7 p.m. and tickets cost $10 in advance and $12 at the door.

Franklin’s Homewood Gourmet turns 10 this weekend!

Franklin’s Homewood Gourmet‘s Baby Blue Salad is arugably one of the most loved dishes in metro Birmingham. Tomorrow morning, July 7, if you head out to the Pepper Place Farmer’s Market, Franklin Biggs will be making it as part of his cooking demonstration (beginning at 9 a.m.).

If you miss that, and after you go by the shop and realize it’s closed for the day, you could head on over to his 10th anniversary celebration at the Children’s Dance Foundation (CDF). It goes from 3 – 7 p.m. and costs $20. The net profit from the event will be split between the CDF and Taste of the Nation, a national program that is working to end childhood hunger in America.

It is a new shop in downtown Birmingham and its having its gallery-style grand opening tonight (July 6) from 5 – 8 p.m. at 2306 2nd Avenue North, the site of an old gallery and frame shop.
