Yes, there are changes at NBC 13

07.6.2007 by AndrĂ© Natta · → 39 Comments

There are a few people that are wondering what’s going on at NBC 13. The station is undergoing an overhaul of its news department. The Birmingham News outlined some of the changes in an article on July 4.

The current changes include the departure of Fran Curry from the station. She has been replaced by Gina Redmond, the former host of their morning and midday broadcasts. Redmond will be replaced by former Fox 6 anchor Andrea Lindenberg and NBC 13 alum Rod Carter. Plans also call for an return to an illuminated presence atop Red Mountain, with an NBC peacock being installed next to the Fox 6 WBRC neon sign.

There must be something wrong with me....I LOVE CHANNEL 13 and all the people there. Andrea, Rod and Stephanie make my day, yes sometime they get a little silly but with all the bad news laughter helps us get started each day. I think they have good chemistry(whatever that means) and they put a smile on my face every morning. Some of these angry people need to take a "Happy Pill" and look for the good things. Cut Gina some slack whatever happened in the past is just that in the past. We are all so blessed to be able to watch unrestricted TV and even be allowed to make the bad comments. Chanel 13, your the best!!!!

Karen Lehane was fired. So was Fran Curry and other folks behind the scenes to make way for Gina.

All I know is I would be totally lost without hearing, "Here are the imporTant facts" before every news story. We really do need a heads up on what is "imporTant", because most of us are so challenged that we just get confused listening to professionals deliver complex, inter-related and non-contiguous news tidbits. The PowerPoint-like slides are just wonderful. If only we had similar alerts for "irrelevant chaff". My news experience would then be complete!

Catherine Alexander, puh-lease. A simple google search using the words "Gina Redmond," producer, and slap will give you a little insight into the anchorwoman. I believe she filed no contest after she was arrested in Pennsylvania.

There is a problem with all of the local media "dumbing down" the news and "teasing" through the commercials. This can also be said for most media outlets in most large to major markets. It's what happens when the entertainment arm of network owned stations and national sales consultants get involved. I'll agree that there are silly statements made by local "newscasters" on live TV. But we have to remember that it is live TV. There's no backspace, and things happen on the fly, and occasionally it's something no one could plan for. That being said, there are plenty of things that could be prepared for. Local news is on the downslide across the country. Birmingham is just one of a hundred markets undergoing the same changes.

Some of you may have noticed that a comment that was placed here earlier today was removed. We are in the process of creating a comment policy for the site in the wake of the personal attacks taking place, particularly in this thread. The simple version is this; those that comment on this site are responsible for their comments and what may result from them. Typing in capital letters is taken as yelling on the web, and there is no reason for that or the personal attacks. Keep your eyes open for the new policy, which should be posted as early as tomorrow afternoon.

Dear Donna: What on earth has Gina Redmond done to make you think she is more concerned with her hair than with the community? Dear Interested: Why do you feel the need to make statements like "I cannot stand Gina Redmond" or "I wouldn't walk down the hall to see Gina Redmond"? You don't even KNOW the woman. You've only seen her reading the news on TV. You can draw very few conclusions about her intelligence, her personality, or her integrity from that. Please try to remember that she is a real person, a real human being, with real feelings, and imagine how YOU would feel if you read these things about yourself, or a member of your family. You should be capable of expressing your personal taste without being a jerk.

I agree with Sara Young. None of the faces that used to lend credence to the newscast are there but Royer. Lass, Garner, Johnson, Mike Moore, and Curry are all gone. Redmond is fake...she tries entirely too hard not to fit in. She comes across more awkward. Brooke Smith lacks talent and is only where she is because she lost on a reality program...that is a shining moment in Birmingham. Linda White I could take or leave. She just doesn't hit the mark. The crew that NBC13 dismissed had a chemistry...these people now do not. Andrea Lindenberg has a presence and fared well on channel 6, but it will be impossible for her to carry it all because the others surely do not have what it takes!

I cannot stand Gina Redmond. I usually watch the morning show because of the lead in to the Today Show. Gina was ridiculous - she made some of the dumbest comments I have ever heard and then they promoted her to the evening news in place of Fran Curry who not only was smart but did many things in the community. She was an excellent representative of the station. I wouldn't walk down the hall to see Gina Redmond. Also, if they wanted to promote someone why not Linda White. I was looking forward to the return of Andrea Lindenberg and had believed her to be a very good news person, however, I am not so impressed with her return. She and Stephanie are way to silly and she has made totally inane remarks. The addition of Carter has toned them down some but not nearly enough. Channel 13's morning show hasn't been worth anything since Ken Lass left.

Fran Curry had class. She presented the news and seemed to care about people and the community. Gina seems to be more interested in her hair than the community. NBC 13 needs to get their priorities straight!

NBC 13 beats all. They got rid of Ken Lass, Wendy Garner and countless others to try to revamp the station. Now they are getting rid of Fran Curry. I'm not sure what they are thinking or if they are. Apparently getting rid of these people hasn't worked and I personally cannot stand even to look at Gina Redmond. I stopped watching NBC 13 the first day she came there. I only watched the 4:30 and 5 p.m. editions because it wasn't so messed up. Now they are putting Gina Redmond in place of Fran Curry?? Maybe the problem isn't the newscasters but the management? Maybe they need to begin by first firing Gina Redmond then the idiots who hired her to begin with. Hire back the people that put NBC 13 on top in the first place.

I though the neon sign on red mountain was WERC - which is the local 960AM station. Fox6 is WBRC. I could be wrong.

Great! Can't wait to see a big corporate logo on Red Mtn. At least the WBRC letters represent an established local interest, albeit part of a huge media conglomerate. Maybe they'll hang an advertising sign around Vulcan's neck like when he was in exile at the Fairgrounds. I bet SuzukiMan has already looked into it.
