Rebuild Bethel marches forward

Rebuild Bethel website screenshot

We haven’t heard a lot about historic Bethel Baptist Church in recent months – the historic building granted National Historic Landmark status in 2005 – not the congregation’s current structure – despite a pledge by Mayor Langford to provide up to $1 million in city funds towards its renovation. Hopefully that will change in the near future as efforts to complete this project continue in the city’s Collegeville neighborhood.

So, you still miss Beaner & Ken huh?

Beaner and Ken screenshot

Screenshot of Beaner & Ken website.

Well you can always let them know just how much Birmingham does! For those of you that didn’t know, Beaner & Ken (well, at least Ken) still maintain a website/blog tied to their former #1 morning show. The show was canceled in mid-December 2006 as part of what I still call our local Radio Carousel.

While still on their extended “vacation” they’re staying pretty active: Beaner’s vlogging (video blogging) for blogtv.com and Ken’s still in The Magic City playing in a band called More Cowbell. So show them some love and send them an email; it may end up in their fan mail section

UPDATE: The Birmingham News… it’s gone blog!

Screenshot of potential “new” Birmingham News homepage.

Well, apparently not yet… though we were able to catch this screenshot of a revamped Birmingham News homepage about mid-morning – though it’s currently gone back to its original state. The redesign resembled the layout that is currently in use on al.com’s entertainment section.

We’re not sure if we just stumbled across something by accident or not, but we’re sure that our friends at al.com will let us know…

UPDATE: 1:12 p.m. – According to the folks at the paper, the page has been fixed, and it is now active as it is picture above. It was suffering problems due to the severe weather affecting the region right now.

Hungry? Here’s an option that gives back this week

This week area Guthrie’s restaurants & NBC 13 are giving away complimentary chicken boxes with donations made; proceeds will benefit the United Way of Central Alabama.

You may want to check out the list of the locations that will be taking part in this effort this week before you head out for lunch via United Way’s PDF.

Help the Big Guy atop Red Mountain breathe a little easier

Si Reasoning - Sierra ClubNow, tomorrow’s Earth Day (officially), at least the one that everyone’s familiar with (maybe)… that’s another post. Anyway, there are a lot of things available to people in Birmingham tomorrow because of the observance that will help make the community a better place to live, whether financially or environmentally. One of the environmental options includes driving up to visit Vulcan atop Red Mountain and getting a free 90 second emissions test beginning at 10 a.m. Click on the link to see the rest of the scheduled testings for this year if you can’t make it tomorrow. There’s more…

Pepper Place Farmers Market, Pepper Place

The Pepper Place Saturday Market is in its ninth year providing residents with a place to get fresh produce while exploring one of the city’s coolest districts. The market will begin promptly at 7 a.m. and close at noon in the Pepper Place parking lot. As always, in addition to fresh produce, hand carved wooden fruit trays, wind chimes, hand blown glass, hot sauces, pottery, homemade fudge, peanut brittle and ice cream. Shoppers can also enjoy music from two stages and a weekly cooking demonstration. A chance to meet up with friends and see what Alabama has to offer in terms of produce.

Cost: Supporting area farmers and good food.
