A skate park update

For those of you who haven’t ventured through the comments and the site to learn more about the skate park situation, allow me to share what Peter Karvonen of Faith Skate Supply posted under the relating Magic City Question:

“We are talking with people in the mayor’s office right now and they are very open to the idea of a public skatepark. We have gotten as far as looking for proposed sites now. The city owns the property at sloss north of 1st Ave. North. They are talking with the right people now in hopes that a skatepark conjoined with sloss furnaces would be a great relationship.

I invision a concrete park there with metal skateable sculptures that would be made there at the furnaces steel works! Sounds amazing to me!”

Definitely sounds like something that would be uniquely Birmingham depending on where the proccess goes… and it will lend itself nicely to my editorial tomorrow morning.

The dirt’s moving at Ruffner

Progress on Birmingham’s Park-nership, one of the larger initiatives undertaken by the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham, always seems to be sought after, so I figured it would make sense to post this image. It’s the view looking through where Ruffner Mountain‘s pavillion once stood out to the site of the nature center’s new visitors center, currently scheduled for a May 2009 completion.

Gas prices update

With approximately 25% of the country’s oil refineries located along or near the path of Hurricane Ike, these rising prices may be around for a few days. We’re seeing several reports following the early ones we mentioned earlier today

We’ve just heard via Twitter that gas in Bluff Park is at $4.49/gallon. If you could put gas prices that you see during your evening commute in our comments section, we’d appreciate it (as well as everybody else who visits The Hub).

Where is WordCamp Birmingham?

WordCamp Birmingham logo - sunburstSo, it’s time for an update on WordCamp Birmingham. First of all, they’ve announced a new host venue for the conference’s Saturday events – the Martha Moore Sykes Studio at the Virginia Samford Theatre. They’ve also announced the initial lineup for speakers and the preliminary schedule (there will be more adjustments in the coming days).

Folks are starting to register for the event as well (it’ll close when it hits 125 people or 9/22/2008 – whichever comes first) and they’re still looking for additional sponsors for the event as well. We’ll have more to announce next week.

So what’s up with our calendar?

That’s been a popular question in recent weeks… it’s not because we aren’t wanting to put information up. It’s because we’re preparing to launch a new one. We wanted to make sure that we were offering the best services possible while living up to our tagline of being Birmingham’s hub. It’s our hope to launch our new system (and a couple other surprises) in two weeks. If you want to learn more and want to help us launch it, drop me a line.

In the meantime, we’d ask that you use our current calendar submission form or email/DM/call us using the many methods available on our contact page (though we’d suggest sending event submissions to timetable@bhamterminal.com).  We’ll do our best to post information about events on Timetable (which is also undergoing a redesign of its own of sorts – pardon the construction).

That new radio station’s good

Whitney had some fun covering the launch of Live 100.5 FM on Friday, and the station’s been having fun getting established in town. They’ve already got a Facebook group (remember, you’ve got to have a Facebook account to see it – and 185 folks have already found it), a live stream of the station available on the station’s website and (in case you missed it) Matt over at AL.com’s got the first 15 songs ever played so you’re ready for that quiz that will inevitably come up.

Signature projects downtown take shape

Today’s ONB Breakfast Briefing focused on the current status of three projects considered by many to be signature statements for Birmingham, including the Railroad Park and the Marriott Renaissance Hotel to be located in the former Regions Bank headquarters.
