Le Tour de Birmingham arrives on Saturday

BiCi Coop has announced an alley cat cycling series that will take place throughout the streets of metro Birmingham during the month of July.

Le Tour de Birmingham will take place each Saturday of July (on July 3, 10, 17, and 31) with additional information available on the organization’s blog (you’ll also be able to help them out by letting them know that you’re willing to volunteer). They currently plan to announce each stage a few days before, providing information like altitude changes, et. al. They’ve already announced this week’s prologue stage; it will be a 2-minute TT from BiCi Coop‘s home on Southside to Parkside Café across from Avondale Park beginning at 8 p.m. There will be some prizes but as they’ve stated on the site, “this race is for the glory not a gift card.”

Regional cooperation for fuel savings

Birmingham’s current effort to go green, which currently includes initiatives like Mayor Langford’s 4-day work week and scrap metal recycling program, could be expanded soon to include a plan to implement a regional plan to use E85 fuel made from wood waste in the city’s 130 current fleet of flex fuel vehicles and other vehicles in the area’s three largest cities.

The mayor’s office let us know that he recently met with Hoover Mayor Tony Petelos and Mayor Ed May of Bessemer to discuss the possibility of developing just such a regional plan. According to the press release, Birmingham alone generates an estimated 16,000 tons of wood waste per year.

“One ton of wood waste generates an estimated 215 gallons of E85 fuel. Just based on that, this City could generate three times our annual fuel consumption,” said Mayor Langford.

Take photos of what’s IN

The IN Birmingham campaign’s been making a lot of folks in the area consider just what that means and how to record it. Libby’s been filling us in on what some of the results have been from the nominations that were collected (here’s her current post), now the folks over at a new Birmingham area photoblog are asking folks to submit photos to their site.

And while there are currently several photos in the Magic City Flickr Group as well as our own Terminal Flickr Group, the more places these photos are shared, particularly when associated with this question, the better!

Two local chefs up for James Beard award

Birmingham’s got two chances to bring home a James Beard Foundation award this year. Frank Stitt (Highlands Bar and Grill) and Chris Hastings (Hot and Hot Fish Club) are both up for “the Oscars of the food world” as the nominees for the 2008 edition of the awards were recently announced.

There are a lot of honors up for grabs, so you may want to visit the official list and scroll down to see who our guys are up against in their respective categories (Stitt – outstanding chef; Hastings – best chef – South).

We’ll find out if they’re winners with everybody else on June 8 when the awards are handed out in Lincoln Center‘s Avery Fisher Hall in New York City. You can always go on up and say you were there when…
