Dean and Co. invade the interwebs

Screenshot of the new Dean and Company website.

So, those of us that have cable service here in Birmingham, AL are familiar, or at least know about Dean and Company. They’ve been on television for 30 years and now they’ve got a website. They were on Rick and Bubba this morning to formally launch it and It’s just as off the wall and… well, you go ahead and take a look for yourselves.

Do you Tweet?

Tweeting - courtesy of Macapper.comThis seems to be a popular question today as Twitter is becoming a more recognized part of everyday communication among people. We still maintain our primary Twitter account (if we haven’t invited you to join it from our other profiles, it’s coming soon). People seem to have all sorts of reasons for sending Twitter messages or tweets. Lisa Hoffman invited some of her followers to share their reasons on her blog while local blogger Ike Pigott updated his expectations.

What are your thoughts?

Urbanham launches redesign

Urbanham.com is about to celebrate ten years of being Birmingham’s web portal for urban lifestyles. Sounds like it’s a perfect time to do a site redesign to us. For the web designers among our readership, the site is now powered using WordPress. Check it out…

Fleabomb’s going to be OK too

The difference is that it won’t be as frequent. So says the founder of Birmingham’s original alternative online website, Stanley Holditch, in a recent post on its current incarnation. We know it’s been up for a while, but we felt obligated to point it out to those of you that didn’t know. it’s a rough time here for media of all types as we say goodbye to WBHM’s Steve Chiotakis tomorrow morning, farewell to AL.com’s Grant Cannon as he heads off to Chicago today, and this. We’re didn’t think of Stanley’s post as a farewell, especially with the pictures of his newborn, but we think the least y’all should do is stop on over and tell him how much you appreciate what he’s done for Birmingham.

Learn Spanish… from the bus system?

Not quite, but yes! It was a little weird when we visited the BJCTA’s (a.k.a. our bus system’s) website earlier today while getting ready for the Tuesday morning City Council post. We went back later to check on it; the item posted at the top of the What’s New items section of their website is a link that takes people to another site, Learn Spanish Today, that offers people to take free Spanish lessons – via a widget dictionary that can be installed on your website or blog or another link on the site.

Before you ask, yes, we did email the BJCTA about the link – we hope to share their response with you soon.

The Encyclopedia of Alabama launches (officially)

Encyclopedia of Alabama logo - Courtesy of websiteWe always plug our relationship with BhamWiki whenever we can. Today there was an official unveiling of what it would be like if the folks at the Wiki ever got a large grant to help supplement it. The Encyclopedia of Alabama was formally launched by Governor Riley today at the Alabama Humanities Foundation Leadership Summit and Awards Luncheon in Hoover (though the site’s been up and active since February). We’re interested in hearing what you think about it – and thanks to GoodCourage for giving up the head’s up. You can always direct message us via Twitter or any of the other contact methods with news tips and story ideas.
