Steve’s last day is Oct. 3

It won’t exactly be the same when you hear Steve Chiotakis‘ voice on the radio after October 3 – mainly because he’ll be ending his reports saying “Marketplace” instead of “WBHM.”

The local host of NPR’s Morning Edition (serving as a companion to many drivers during their commutes) and reporter for our local public radio station is leaving Birmingham to become a reporter for the Marketplace Morning Report, produced out of Los Angeles. The folks at 90.3 FM have an announcement about his departure up on their site. Plus, you may want to check out Steve’s personal site (the first link) in case you’re looking to buy…

Shia, have you considered that perhaps you underestimate Bham and it’s residents a bit? Some of us are open to cultural events, arts, etc and indeed, do have backgrounds that embrace it. The way I see it, all of us here in Bham have really a great opportunity to bring more of these things into the mainstream. That’s one of the reasons why I like Bham – what we can accomplish here is amazing as everything hasn’t yet been done here yet.

Actually, my comment was meant more as a joke than a serious comment about LA. While it is true I prefer Bham, I don’t really want to debate the thing to death.

By far, the reason why I posted was that I wanted to wish Steve well there.

Good luck Steve! We’ll miss you!

True, that is the purpose of the site. Sorry if I took if off-track.
However, I can no more give Birmingham the things I like about places like LA more than I can change LA to be more like Birmingham i the ways that I like Birmingham.
Nor do I even think I should, since the things I’d want to change would probably not be the things many people who live here would like or even want. It would basically be a form of cultural superiority to attempt to make those changes. I just have different ideas than others.

    Shia,

I never said which person was bitter. Both of you and alabastra are free to your opinions. However, one of the goals of this site is to not necessarily badmouth anywhere or anyone but to be constructive about the criticisms. One hope is to encourage conversations about how to change it for the better…

I always relate the conversation back to Birmingham as that is the focus of the site. I’m sorry if anyone ever feels slighted when I do.

    I’m bitter?
I love how its common that when people (and this happens everywhere) badmouth other places it’s fine, but when they get defensive and voice negative things about the native town, they are being negative, or sometimes seen as just plain wrong.
I responded with a basically equal comment. why isn’t the previous poster just being “bitter”?

I’d hope that instead of sounding bitter about where you want to live, you’d be willing to help make the changes here that will get you to change your mind.

    Just saying…

LA’s far from my favorite place, but I’d rather live there than Birmingham.

    Some would, not I.

I spent ten years living there, and while there is a lot to enjoy – my personal opinion is that it is a crappier place to live than b’ham.

    KCRW is fantastic though.

Some would feel its not any crappier than Birmingham, even if you’re not rich.

Oh man, I did not know this. Marketplace is one of my favorite shows and Steve is one of my favorite Bham newsguys. I will miss him! I always thought he really represented Bham in a professional light.

Hope he likes LA- fun place to visit, crap place to live (unless you have a gazillion dollars and earthquake insurance)

It’s about time this talent went on to bigger things. Birmingham will miss him but LA should look out.
