Meet Soledad, The Bottletree’s fawn

Soledad. acnatta/FlickrA notable member of The Bottletree‘s family has been on an extended vacation recently. The fawn that normally graces the liquor shelves of the Avondale eatery and music venue hitched a ride with London-based band The xx shortly after their March 23 performance there. They decided to name the fawn “Soledad” and they captured images from the journey and shared them via a blog. Soledad also apparently set up her own Twitter account but never used it. The fawn has recently returned to its perch overlooking the happenings at The Bottetree’s bar.

According to the most recent post, more adventures will be shared soon.

It was not the first item to ever hitch a ride with the band – you may also want to meet Richard the Hamster…

UPDATE: Leon Redbone’s in town TONIGHT!

One person at random will find out at 4 p.m. that they’ve got a chance to win two (2) tickets to see Leon Redbone live and in person in Birmingham’s Five Points South entertainment district. Sipsey Tavern is located at 1926 12th Ave. S (the former Bailey’s Pub location for those in the know).  I’ve got a feeling that you’ll recognize the voice behind the theme song to Mr. Belvedere (it’s the video linked here) and classic Saturday Night Live appearances among other things.

WENN goes Neo-Soul

The radio carousel has apparently decided to visit more than one station here in Birmingham, AL this month, bringing a change to both AM and FM dials and a return of a respected set of call letters.

WENN-FM station logoWhile the effort to Save Live 100.5 has grown to more than 17,000 people on Facebook, the call letters WENN have apparently returned to the FM dial at a new address. The format change for the AM signal from news/talk to neo-soul and new FM simulcast of that new format takes place as people gathered downtown today for the first day of the annual A.G. Gaston Conference, named for the prominent African American businessman, Demopolis native and incidentally a former owner of the call letters.

Birmingham’s Neo-Soul Station 101.9 FM is also currently streaming on the Internet and appears to be owned by Cox Radio. The station is currently running an automated playlist without on-air personalities, though one would assume that will change in the near future.

Ludacris says he’s not playing Heritage Fest

UPDATE: 8.11.2009 – The organizers of the Birmingham Heritage Festival  have announced that this year’s event has been canceled. The Birmingham News has the details.

Apparently the reduction in ticket prices last weekend for this weekend’s Birmingham Heritage Festival has encouraged its organizers to move forward with it (at least according to the front page of their official website. Those who bought tickets to see Ludacris at the festival on Friday night though may be a little disappointed; the hip-hop star sent out the following tweet last night:

Bogus promoter alert!!! Birmingham, AL Heritage festival, completely false. Luda will not be there so don’t buy tickets!!!

City Stages is no more…

newcslogoIf you haven’t already heard, the Birmingham Cultural and Heritage Foundation announced earlier today that City Stages is no more. The Birmingham News reported the story first earlier this afternoon. Wade on Birmingham and bham.fm have also posted about the news and already have comment threads of their own. Wade’s includes a link to Dennis Pillion’s post about his last visit to the three-day music festival.

Tonight’s episode of WBHM’s Tapestry program (one of the last weekly editions) plans to include a look at “the death of City Stages” while bham.fm’s Twitter feed gives us a look at how this announcement may have ripple effects throughout the community. There’s also all of the other thoughts being shared on Twitter.

UPDATE: City Stages 2009 | Acts announced, website unveiled

This morning we’ve started seeing the first acts for City Stages 2009 be announced and dissected (courtesy of The Birmingham News and Wade on Birmingham respectively). So, what else can we add?

cs2009screenWell, for starters the festival ‘s new website is scheduled for launched today – this morning actually. Whether that happens or not, it’s our understanding that It has been built using WordPress, the same CMS program used to operate The Terminal. The site will feature the festival’s new logo and allow you to share your favorite City Stages memory. We also know that we’re planning our own special City Stages section again this year, though it is still not ready for its own unveiling as of yet.

So for the time being, we want to know what you think – as Birmingham’s world class music festival is the basis of today’s Magic City Question.

Farewell, Cave9

cave9Bham.fm reported yesterday that long-time Birmingham indie music venue Cave9 had officially closed its doors over the weekend. The local music website has a list of the shows that have been moved to GreenCup Books while also providing a fond farewell for the all ages venue – in all of its forms.

If you weren’t familiar with the venue, here’s a story written for The Birmingham Buzz back in 2008 when it was still on Magnolia Avenue. There’s also the chance that more news will be available from their MySpace profile, their page on Facebook or their Twitter feed in the coming days…
