A new ‘Cities’ list, an interesting result

Women’s Health Magazine recently unveiled its list of the Best and Worst Cities for Women. While Birmingham was ranked near the bottom of the list overall (92 out of 100), it did get recognized as being the best city with the most OG-BYNs.

Check out where other cities landed on the list as well as in specific categories.

Larry’s been busy too

Today’s been a busy day insofar as Birmingham mayor Larry Langford’s legal issues are concerned. This afternoon the legal team representing the mayor against federal charges brought against him recently asked that his right to a speedy trial be waived due to the amount of information that must be sorted through. The team will be hoping that the ruling in response to this motion is in their favor, unlike the ruling that was handed down earlier in the day involving the case brought against him by Central Alabama Pride, Inc. in late August.

Jingle, Jangle, Jingle…

We seemed to make a big splash last year for the holidays with our digital message to readers. I thought it might be a good idea to revisit the main reason for the enjoyment – an appearance by Mr. Bingle.

It’s OK if you don’t know who he is; here’s a little background on him as well as his story. He recently made his annual appearance in New Orleans’ Christmas parade and is still owned by Dillards. Considering the cold weather, it may just be the type of thing to finish putting you in the right mindset for the season. Maybe you”l want to  join his fan site as well.

The joy of the holiday season will fill Linn Park in downtown Birmingham as the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony takes place. The annual parade will begin at 5 p.m, moving north along 20th Street North and ending at Linn Park where the ceremony is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. It should be warm enough to enjoy the excitement.

UPDATED: Langford arrested on federal charges

UPDATE; 12.1.2008: Check out this full report from Birmingham View’s Vickii Howell.

The first work day after the Thanksgiving holiday began with Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford being arrested on federal charges early this morning. The 101-count indictment was unsealed today during a news conference held by U.S. Attorney Alice Martin. We do know that he is being held at the Jefferson County Courthouse. There is a press conference scheduled to take place at 10 a.m. We’re assuming that NBC 13 and myFoxAL.com will cover the conference live.

We’re going to take our time on this one, so we’ll also invite you to follow this breaking news story across the local media spectrum:

NBC 13, Fox 6, CBS 42, ABC 33/40, Birmingham Weekly, The Birmingham News.

Celebrate Repeal Day (and the holidays) with The Hub!

It’s the time of year where folks find time to come together and enjoy each other’s company – and we wouldn’t want it any other way! So how about putting our little get-together on your calendar now so you don’t forget?

Come on out Friday, December 5 for a special holiday edition of The Terminally Happy Hour downtown at Speakeasy!

Let us know you’re coming via RSVP at Facebook or Upcoming!

See, December 5 happens to be the 75th anniversary of passage of the 21st Amendement (a.k.a. Repeal Day), repealing the 18th Amendment (the one that ushered in Prohibition). So we figured, what better way to celebrate than to go to a bar named Speakeasy. We’re excited that they’ll will be letting us invade the bar that night. We’ll have some more information next week…

But if you know of any other holiday parties we can add to the list, let us know in the comments section.
