A Summer Splash for a Birmingham institution

Southern Environmental Center logoThe Southern Environmental Center at Birmingham Southern College is starting to celebrate its 10th anniversary this month with its first ever online auction. Summer Splash currently has 19 items available for visitors to bid on with all proceeds going to support the organizations educational efforts. We’re pretty sure they’d appreciate you visiting (and bidding) early and often. But no worries, you can visit and bid until May 21 and there’s always EcoFest 10 in October…

Paws on the Patio visits Mt. Laurel

Hand in Paw has announced that Area 41 Pizza in Mt. Laurel will host Paws on the Patio every Monday through the month of June. The restaurant will donate 8% of the evenings’ sales to Hand in Paw. They’ve also promised announcements of additional locations in the near future.
There will also be a photographer from Southern Living taking pictures for an article about Paws on the Patio during this evening’s gathering at the restaurant beginning at 5:30 p.m. They’re asking that you show up dressed in bright spring colors and that if you are part of a therapy team they’d like you to come out to represent Hand in Paw in your uniform. Sounds like a great way to spend Cinco de Mayo while dining with your dog for a good cause – and a chance that you might be an upcoming issue of Southern Living!

Hungry? Here’s an option that gives back this week

This week area Guthrie’s restaurants & NBC 13 are giving away complimentary chicken boxes with donations made; proceeds will benefit the United Way of Central Alabama.

You may want to check out the list of the locations that will be taking part in this effort this week before you head out for lunch via United Way’s PDF.

Giving for the soul in Birmingham

Soul patrol convention partyFans of former American Idol Taylor Hicks must be proud of some of his fans. They have organized a nonprofit organization called Harmony for the Soul and have announced a National Soul Patrol Convention for early May here in Birmingham May 9 & 10(thanks to Idol Stalker for the tip).

The group is not affiliated with Hicks but definitely believes in his spirit of giving. Monies collected during the convention will benefit Kid One Transport and the Alabama/Georgia chapters of Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Visit the organization’s website for more information about it and the event (and to purchase tickets).

Grow your mustaches for the kids…

MustacheIt’s time for the Sweetest ‘Stache contest here in Birmingham. You can visit the Mustaches for Kids website to learn more about how this competition came to be and who benefits from the growth of facial hair for four weeks. Growing season in this case will be from April 1 – May 1, with a kick-off Clean Shaven Day party happening at The Bottletree on April Fool’s Day. Our effort will benefit Children’s Hospital in New Orleans.

There will be Mustache Checkpoint Days around town throughout the month at area bars (April 10, 17 & 24 @ 8 p.m.). I’m sure that we’ll get more information about the location of these events later on, though we do know that the one on the 17th will be at Rojo.

Come on, any chance to take part in a competition that includes being recognized for “beer foam retention” – when the ‘staches are judged on Thursday, May 1 @ The Bottletree – needs to be shouted from the rooftops…
