City Stages is no more…

newcslogoIf you haven’t already heard, the Birmingham Cultural and Heritage Foundation announced earlier today that City Stages is no more. The Birmingham News reported the story first earlier this afternoon. Wade on Birmingham and bham.fm have also posted about the news and already have comment threads of their own. Wade’s includes a link to Dennis Pillion’s post about his last visit to the three-day music festival.

Tonight’s episode of WBHM’s Tapestry program (one of the last weekly editions) plans to include a look at “the death of City Stages” while bham.fm’s Twitter feed gives us a look at how this announcement may have ripple effects throughout the community. There’s also all of the other thoughts being shared on Twitter.

A new circulator for downtown Birmingham?

breeze-busThat’s what the topic will be at tomorrow’s Operation New Birmingham breakfast briefing, particularly why it would make sense to get on these new buses, the Breeze circulators. Charles Ball, executive director of the Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham plans to be available to answer questions about the current status of the three year old In Town Transit Partnership and about how the downtown circulator would serve as the basis of a rethinking of the region’s transit system. You’ll be able to see portions of the presentation on the ITP website beginning late tomorrow morning.

It was also the last topic of conversation during last night’s first #bhamchat; the recap’s up over on my Birmingham.

Tour the Lyric this afternoon

The historic Lyric andAlabama Theatres will be open for tours this Sunday afternoon from 2-4 p.m. Historian Dan Liles will be on hand to give the history of the Lyric. Organ crew chief Larry Donaldson will be available to answer questions about Alabama Theatre’s Mighty Wurlitzer pipe organ and the Alabama’s technical director, Jeff Kizziah will be up in the projection booth.

Looking both ways in downtown Birmingham

Tonight those in the Birmingham Public Library‘s Arrington Auditorium beginning at 5:30 p.m. will hear the results of a study conducted by Operation New Birmingham, the Regional Planning Commission, the Birmingham Metropolitan Planning Organization and the City of Birmingham to look at turning some of our one-way streets back to two-way streets. They’ve been looking at 2nd, 3rd and 4th Avenues North and 13th, 14th, 17th and 18th Streets. Here’s some more info.

Birmingham Heritage Festival to return in August

Birmingham Heritage Festival logo - courtesy of websiteThis morning the Birmingham Heritage Festival announced that it will return, with the music portion of the festival taking place August 14-16 in downtown Birmingham’s Linn Park. The festival will also include community empowerment seminars running from August 11-13 at Boutwell Auditorium.

Urbanham.com posted the official press release which contains the names of the first acts to be confirmed for this year’s festival as well as a link to its new website. Announced acts include Keyshia Cole, Angie Stone, Chaka Khan, Flo Rida, and Atlantic Starr. The website also lists Musiq Soulchild as scheduled to perform though they were not included on the press release.

There had been an announcement made via the Internet in late January.

Random shots: Linn Park’s a construction zone

Alabama sculptor Christopher Fennell is the installation artist for  for this weekend’s ONB Magic City Art Connection in downtown Birmingham. Here you see the artist as he works on completing his piece, called “Artist’s Fire”, in Linn Park in time for the start of the annual arts festival on Friday.

Parking deck construction = road closings

Construction work on the addition to the 4th Avenue parking deck in downtown Birmingham today means that Richard Arrington, Jr. Blvd. between 4th and 5th Avenues North is currently closed to traffic.

While it is a quiet day of the week downtown, it could lead to delays for folks that use the road to access area churches as well as the last day of events at this weekend’s ImagiCon.
