Rotaract Club of Birmingham’s “Leading a Legacy” Gala, Alabama Theatre

The Gala is a fund raiser for the Rotaract Club of Birmingham‘s signature service project Ready 2 Read. You are invited to help them place libraries in every 2nd grade classroom in the Birmingham City school system by dancing the night away on the stage of the historic Alabama Theatre.

The evening will feature performances from The Previews of Red Mountain Theatre, surprise guests, an open bar, heavy hors d’oeuvres and the sounds of a sensational 19-piece big band. The Gala is black-tie optional for men and cocktail attire for ladies.

Cost: $40 per person; $75 per couple (after March 1, tickets increase to $50/person and $95/couple).

Friday, it’s the women’s turn

10 in 30 women only logoThe mayor’s office has already announced the next 10/30 Summit dealing with crime in the city of Birmingham. This time it will be a women’s only crowd at Fair Park Arena on Leap Year Day, February 29, beginning at 6 p.m.

Mayor Langford has issued his call to African-American women in the City of Birmingham on the city’s website (it’s currently item #3 in the newsroom loop on the front of the site), saying that “the women of this city have a fearless determination and we need their help and support to change our community.”

So why were we so quiet today?

Well, it’s not because it was a slow news day – that’s for sure! We were beginning to make some changes to the look and feel of the site. If you’re reading this from the front page, you’ve already got a taste of what I’m talking about and there are more throughout Birmingham’s hub.

We’ll be back to our normal extreme posting selves on Monday (and you might even see a post or two during the weekend).

In the meantime, take a look at yesterday’s my Birmingham post, think of some people you’d nominate and check out some of the other simple changes around the site.

An opportunity for area photographers

We got an earlier this afternoon about an opportunity for photographers. (We would have gotten it up then, but as you can probably tell if you’re reading us on the front page, we were a little busy Smile).

Apparently a client of o2 ideas is looking for a photograph to be used as a poster backdrop for a cultural training meeting. The image needs to “capture” Alabama and Georgia because that is where these specific employees work and live. For this particular project they want a “nature” image that encapsulates the “Southern Experience”. Pictures can be from any season and do not need to include people or animals.

Birmingham Urban League celebrates 40 years

Birmingham Urban LeagueThe Birmingham Urban League will be celebrating their 40th anniversary this Friday at the Harbert Center. Both the Urban League and the Birmingham Urban League Young Professionals (BULYP) advance their missions through the delivery of programs that empower area racial and ethnic groups.

Both groups focus specifically on education, housing, workforce development and youth services. They are working together to close gaps by addressing the problems that racial and ethnic groups face in the areas of education, economics, health, civic engagements and civil rights.

13th Annual Rickwood Classic, Rickwood Field

Your Birmingham Barons will don replicas of their 1951-52 uniforms (from their time as a Red Sox affiliate) as they take on the Jacksonville Suns at America’s oldest ballpark for a “businessman’s special.”

They have a chance to run their winning streak in the annual retro game to three in a row while honoring former Baron and 17-year major leaguer Jimmy Piersall. The first 1,500 fans that get in will receive a vintage portrait of Piersall from the ’52 season.
