Eternal Flame is “out of order” again

The Eternal Flame of Freedom has once again gone dark in Birmingham’s Linn Park – but with good reason. The monument, relit last month, had a gas leak according to a response received via email earlier today from the mayor’s office.

April Odom, the mayor’s director of communications, said in response to our email that “the city is working with Alagasco to repair the damaged part although the maintenance of the statue is the responsibility of the Jefferson County Commission.”

The state house bill comes up for discussion tomorrow in Montgomery and could greatly affect not just Birmingham but the entire state.

Needless to say, you either wouldn’t believe us or you’d think we were crazier than we already admit to.

So, we can score a KEXP remote

I was listening to KEXP this morning online in Seattle – they’ve been a big supporter of many of our local acts in recent years. Well, they’re actually on the last day of their pledge drive over there. If I did my math correctly, it’ll be history at around 4 p.m. today Central time.

While I highly doubt that we’ll catch San Fransisco or Chicago, it would be interesting to see just how many of us actually listen (though those of us that listen that can also pledge is another story). Check their City to City Challenge page for more information. The winning city gets a live remote…

and while you’re at it, how about submitting an answer for our new Magic City Question – What’s your favorite radio station?

Critical Mass rolls through Birmingham tonight

The grassroots movement known as Critical Mass will attempt to make its presence known in Birmingham this evening at 6 p.m. Their inaugural ride will begin at Linn Park downtown. These rides, which take place monthly throughout the country (and the world) are geared to remind drivers that cyclists should be allowed to share the road and that they’re here.

The cyclists follow all of the rules of the road, emphasizing bicycle safety and a sustainable method of transportation. There’s no real leader or plan to the route – it just seems to happen (and it’s been happening now for more than 15 years). As you can see, the longer it goes, the more people get involved – like the scene from NYC up above.
