A female cardinal feeds her chicks in a nest built in an unused gas lamp in the backyard of a Roebuck Springs house on Birmingham’s east side. The chicks hatched about three days ago, a normal incubation period is 12 to 13 days, and if all goes well they will fledge the nest in the next week. The standard time from hatching to fledging is about 9 days or so.

I’m not exactly sure if this will work, especially since there are so many folks that will probably not see this in time, but it doesn’t hurt to ask…
We did the math last night and figured that there’s got to be at least 50 It’s Nice to Have You in Birmingham (Black Terminal) t-shirts currently floating around The Magic City. We also figure that most of you will be at least considering showing up at the Magic City Art Connection during this weekend (rain or shine). So, we were wondering if it would be possible to get most of you to wear your shirts this weekend when you head out there – I’ll wear mine on Saturday. We just figured it would be a pretty cool way to let folks know who’s reading the site (and maybe even get some more folks involved).
There’s a second part to this request – to ask all of you that currently have shirts to send in a picture to us of you wearing it. We’ll share it with everybody else in a new gallery that we’re setting up as soon as we get the first images in. Send your photos to photos@bhamterminal.com or if you’re a Flickr member, add them to our Flickr group.

Earlier this week, Scrollworks and the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra (MYO) announced a remix contest. For those not familiar with the concept, you’ll want to check out the details on their blog. You get to rework a recording of the MYO in concert performing Paganini’s “Moses Variations” with Michael Fernandez, principal violist of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra.
Why should you be interested in this? Because you have a chance to win $250, that’s why! That and it means that you’ll want to go to the MYO’s concert at the Carver Theatre on May 11 to find out who wins. You may also want to take a moment and learn more about this incredible project taking place in The Magic City…

Boutwell’s the tipping point tonight
This morning’s Birmingham News points out the frequency that days of prayer are held in the city (as Mayor Langford prepares for one this evening officially announced earlier this week) well as the rumblings about legal action that may be taken if it’s found to be an official government event. The event has definitely drawn some criticism, even locally. We even have our own veiled opinion, though from a slightly different angle.
We’ve gotten a few responses to our current Magic City Question; as we get ready to change it later on today, we’d welcome anyone else that wants to lend their voices to the conversation.
