Parking deck construction = road closings

Construction work on the addition to the 4th Avenue parking deck in downtown Birmingham today means that Richard Arrington, Jr. Blvd. between 4th and 5th Avenues North is currently closed to traffic.

While it is a quiet day of the week downtown, it could lead to delays for folks that use the road to access area churches as well as the last day of events at this weekend’s ImagiCon.

Hendricks sponsors showing of international artists

Painting "The Thinker"

Former Birmingham City Councilor Elias Hendricks loves art;  his personal collection is a sight to behold.  Periodically he brings in artists (the example shown is by a Ghanaian painter) and dealers  to display work in the 2nd floor gallery of the Transportation Building downtown.

This could be a good time to get a really good piece(s) because artists are really anxious to make deals these days.  There’s an opening this afternoon (March 28) at 2201 2nd Avenue North (across from the Wine Loft).

Get more details by calling 205.266.4927.

The mayor… in an Indy Car?

Imagine my surprise when the FedEx delivery guy comes in where I’m sitting in downtown Birmingham and asks if any of us saw the Indy Car speeding down 20th Street North yesterday morning with Mayor Larry Langford driving. None of us there had, but, after some digging around on Twitter, we found at least one photo floating around online (thanks @vulcansmuse & @rachelpinson). Plus, there’s also this video courtesy of Fox 6 available on their site this morning.

Turns out the mayor wasn’t behind the wheel, but enjoying the ride as he reminded folks about this weekend’s Indy Car test runs out at Barber. Others who were out at the Firestone store in Pelham had the same opportunity to ride in an Indy Car yesterday afternoon.

There were some folks though that wished that they had seen the mayor in person later in the day… in Southtown.

An “off-line” home for The Terminal

shift101_0628Our sole Newsstand post on Friday alluded (and eluded) to some news about the site being made yesterday morning. Well, that news is intertwined with this bit:

A short time ago, a lease was to have been signed for 2308 2nd Avenue North. This was the first step in opening a coworking space in Birmingham, AL. The Terminal is set to be an anchor tenant in the space, to be called Shift Coworking, once it opens later this spring. The space will be managed by Shift 101, a consulting firm with folks based here in the city.

It is hoping to be open as early as mid-April. The Terminal’s talked about some of the coworking groups that have formed in Birmingham in recent months and this appears to be the next logical step in the local movement. We’re looking foward to the opportunities that a physical office provides, including the chance to start our long planned speakers series (among other things). That’s why we’ve asked the question that we did today over on Magic City Question.

In short, it allows us to one thing that will undoubtedly be necessary as social media moves forward – provide a physical home for where the conversations can take place off-line. I explain over on My Birmingham.

Apparently The Bottletree‘s Brian Teasley will have his entire DVD collection (estimated to be somewhere around 1,000) available for sale tomorrow at What’s on 2nd? at 2306 2nd Avenue North in downtown Birmingham. The sale starts at 11 a.m. with some of the titles available for as little as $5. According to the email that went out earlier this evening, it will be “a virtual horde of great classics, documentaries, tv series, rare British comedy, Criterion collection, and foreign films.”

UPDATE: The Mayor speaks at the ONB Breakfast Briefing

This morning Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford speaks to a crowded room at the Harbert Center to review progress on various projects taking place in the City. He has already spoken about the loss of common sense in the city as well as the city’s new 3D map, focused on Birmingham’s City Center. There has also been a presentation of the DVD created to make the case for the funding of the Birmingham Zoo’s expansion.

Downtown’s former Protective Life building empties

Protective Life BuildingWe’ve heard from several sources that the former home to Protective Life and the Birmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce among others was in the process of being vacated this month. There has been no explanation as to why all of the tenants of the building have been asked to leave. Those of you that have followed The Terminal during the last almost two years know that our first anniversary celebration was held on the top floor of the building on March 14 last year.

We’ll see if we can learn any additional information and update this post accordingly. We’ll also see if we can’t fill you in on where our second anniversary celebration will be taking place next month in the near future.
