One day I’ll actually make their acquaintance and feel like I can use their first names (their last names are Hastings and Stitt in case you were wondering). This marks the second year in a row that both Birmingham, AL based chefs have made it to at least the semi-finalist round (here’s the list of contenders) of The James Beard Foundation Awards. Stitt (of Highlands Bar & Grill) is a potential contender for the nation’s best chef while Hastings (Hot & Hot Fish Club) is hoping to be a finalist in the category of best chef in the South.
The finalists will be named on March 23, with the winners announced on May 3 via a media event and the awards’ official website.

Well, it’s not available on the City of Birmingham‘s website as last year’s is. You will find it over on BhamWiki. The guys over there painstakingly listened to Mayor Langford’s remarks and transcribed his words for everyone to see.
So don’t just hang out here, head on over there and check it out (though it is a fairly long read)! You could also check out the video of the mayor’s comments during the Birmingham City Council meeting on January 27.

UPDATE – 5.19.2009: According to Urbanham.com, the festival will return in mid-August. Here are the details.
A quick look around the Internet late last night brought up this page of information for folks wondering about the future of the Birmingham Heritage Festival.
There is no location listed but there are dates for this year’s event (in August) and contact information for anyone looking to be involved in the festival. We’ll keep an eye on it and look forward to doing some coverage of it this summer.

Yep, that’s the word we’ve just received – BBVA Compass will announce plans to lay off nearly 10% of their workforce as early as later today. NOTE: They did announce it today – here’s NBC 13’s account via the Associated Press and The Birmingham News‘ post on their breaking news blog, where they confirm that 200 of the jobs will be lost in the Birmingham area.
We’re awaiting confirmation. It would be a major amount of cuts as well, reportedly 10% reduction in current staff numbers. When the last round of job cuts were announced in late November, the bank was reportedly employing more than 13.000 people across six states.
Sources report that internal emails indicated that 1,200 positions would be eliminated with individual notifications made “over the next couple of weeks.” Severance and placement services were also offered.

So besides finally realizing that the throngs of people are starting to arrive here in town, I’ve also found some very interesting free activities that have been available to visitors over the weekend. This exhibit closes tonight, but thanks to the fun of the web, and The Terminal’s YouTube channel, portions of it will live on for a little while longer…
