That’s according to the folks at MarketWatch.com as Birmingham was ranked as the 9th best city to do business in the country. Accroding to their site, they:

… measured the concentration of Fortune 1000, S&P 500, Russell 2000 and Forbes 400 private companies in the nation’s top 50 metro areas, as well as concentration of small businesses. The study also measured population growth, unemployment and job growth.

Magic City Question: Your comments about Jeffco budget cuts

The Jefferson County Commission passed their fiscal 2008 budget today. The $660 million budget cuts $23 million total for the arts (notably the Cultural Alliance) and currently vacant county positions. The Birmingham News Breaking News blog has a brief post about the vote, which was along party lines.

What are your thoughts about the budget and what it means?

NOTE: While it is our intention to have the candidates pages completed by the end of the day, our intentions to attend this evening’s forum at WorkPlay may make that impossible. If the pages are not up by 4 p.m. this evening, assume that the pages will be turned on by 9 a.m. tomorrow morning. All ten (10) candidates will have profile pages.

If you have not had the opportunity to check out this series yet, take a look at the links that follow the read more link and then tune in this evening (or listen online) while a great panel sits to discuss where we are and what’s next.

Let’s scream for more ice cream

Many may be aware of the fact that Dunkin Brands, the company that has already announced a return of the donut & coffee chain Dunkin Donuts to the Magic City region, also owns Baskin Robbins. The company has also done a great job of pairing the two chains with each other throughout the country.

So one would think it was only a matter of time before we saw this announcement come from the Massachusetts-based company earlier today. If you follow the suggested logic in this Birmingham Business Journal report, could we see one more announcement before too long? We’ll see… In the meantime, you can always try your hand at being a franchisee; the open house is next Tuesday.
