He looks so much taller…

Looking up at Vulcan. acnatta/FlickrWell, apparently Vulcan is tall and old (he just celebrated his 104th); he’s just not the tallest statue in the South. That honor goes to The Golden Driller in Tulsa, OK. The Big Guy atop Red Mountain does get to claim being the fifth tallest according to the list posted to Southern Living’s Tales from the Road blog yesterday.

You know, it does look like it would be a pretty cool road trip though… (see the map at the bottom of the post). Plus, you can’t beat having the tallest statue in the South also doing double duty as the namesake for a minor league baseball team

UPDATE: Blaze is lighting up UAB’s campus

The 3-ton, smoke-breathing statue of UAB’s mascot, Blaze, was unveiled Tuesday afternoon in front of the Bartow Arena. The 9 foot tall by 16 foot long, 7,000 pound smoke spewing statue created by artist T.J. Neil of Homosassa, FL. It cost approximately $30,000 was commissioned by the UAB National Alumni Society. UAB president Carol Garrison said the statue will breath smoke on special occasions, the first of which will be this weekend’s commencement (it starts at 2 p.m. on Saturday).

You did know it was Free Cone Day, right?

Free Cone Day imageSo you’ve just finished seeing the unveiling of a 9′ tall Blaze the Dragon (if you haven’t, we think we’ll have photos shortly) and you’re feeling like an ice cream cone. Yes, we know it’s in the high 50s but it is springtime…

and since we’ve been on this food kick since yesterday, we figured you needed to be reminded that today is Free Cone Day at Ben & Jerry‘s locations across the country, including our three area locations.

I’ll buy a vowel…

I came across this while looking around the Crestwood North Yahoo Group yesterday…

“… Jana Harris, Ramsay [High School] graduate and a native of Birmingham, will be on Wheel of Fortune tomorrow night, April 1, 2008. I told her all those puzzles we did in class would help her in the real world one day…”

Check it out if you can tonight…

Grow your mustaches for the kids…

MustacheIt’s time for the Sweetest ‘Stache contest here in Birmingham. You can visit the Mustaches for Kids website to learn more about how this competition came to be and who benefits from the growth of facial hair for four weeks. Growing season in this case will be from April 1 – May 1, with a kick-off Clean Shaven Day party happening at The Bottletree on April Fool’s Day. Our effort will benefit Children’s Hospital in New Orleans.

There will be Mustache Checkpoint Days around town throughout the month at area bars (April 10, 17 & 24 @ 8 p.m.). I’m sure that we’ll get more information about the location of these events later on, though we do know that the one on the 17th will be at Rojo.

Come on, any chance to take part in a competition that includes being recognized for “beer foam retention” – when the ‘staches are judged on Thursday, May 1 @ The Bottletree – needs to be shouted from the rooftops…

Air Jordan honors Mike’s Barons era

Air Jordan 1 Opening Day Pack

There’s been a lot of talk this year about the return of the Air Jordan 1. There are several models being released this year, including the recently released Opening Day Pack. The pairs honor Michael Jordan‘s time in MLB’s Chicago White Sox system (including his Airness’ time as a Birmingham Baron).

TheĀ  “home” pair (above) features a white upperĀ  compared to the “away” pair that features a black upper. They are already available online for purchase on eBay (go figure), though you may want to keep your eyes out for those available for their suggested retail price of $100.

Soothing banks through music

JeffCoCrap.com screenshotOne resident thinks that music and bumper stickers will help ease the Jefferson County sewer debt, though in a completely different way than Birmingham city councilor William Bell’s proposal or one suggested by Jefferson County Commission president Bettye Fine Collins. This proposal calls for visitors to jeffcocrap.com to purchase bumper stickers, t-shirts and similar items, with a portion of the proceeds going to cover the principal of the county’s mounting debt. You can also check out the Jefferson County Sewer Flush over on YouTube.

We still have a feeling that it would take a long time for the money to pile up.
