From the Stationmaster: What type of mayor do you want?

Just a couple of things for this Wednesday afternoon:

A reminder that you can win tickets to the Junior Patrons Pompeii Preview Gala courtesy of your hub for information! For those that tried earlier today and got frustrated; yes, we fixed the problem on our end that was making it a little difficult to register. It’s all better now.

Check out this editorial asking us to think about the characteristics our next mayor should have instead of the issues over on my Birmingham. Some interesting food for thought as we wind down the general election portion of this year’s mayoral race. Especially as the issues are making it tougher to evaluate the individuals as fairly as we’d like to.

Enjoy the ride!

This morning at the city’s Design Review Committee meeting, approval for demolition was granted to UAB so that they could demolish the former Parliament House Motor Hotel on 20th Street South. Jeremy Erdreich was at this morning’s meeting and sent in this letter to my Birmingham. It is written in response to André’s editorial about our city’s urban fabric.

Go on over and check it out!

Today’s my Birmingham writer: Sean Saffle

Head on over to my Birmingham this afternoon and check out Sean Saffle’s submission. It’s definitely something to consider as today we will top 100° again.

CommuteSmarter, not harder

NOTE: If you’d like to submit something for my Birmingham, please check out our submission guidelines and then contact André Natta @ andre@bhamterminal.com.

Take a Moment: Happy Hour for a Cause nominees

I’d like to take this opportunity to once again thank everyone that took the time to share their nominees for this poll question. We did whittle down the list as well as consider entries that were sent in via email and telephone before the 11:59 p.m. deadline on Saturday. Pop on over to my Birmingham and find out what was in our minds as figured it out.

The poll will magically appear at 3 p.m. today on the front page. If you click on the read more link, you will see links to all of the groups included in the poll. Stay tuned also for final details about our post-launch party on August 29.

NOTE: The poll will run until 11:59 p.m. this Friday!

Big dreams can hurt sometimes

From the Stationmaster: We’re seeking submissions for my Birmingham

my birmingham header

This is a call for submissions to my Birmingham, our editorial section. While we give the whole song and dance about why my Birmingham exists over here, I’d like to take a moment to explain the original concept behind this as it may help encourage you to write in.

I had tried to start this section last year on my personal blog, Dre’s Ramblings, as a way to find out what people enjoyed or disliked about Birmingham, hoping that it may lead to additional conversation. The concept is definitely not something new; the best example out there is the This I Believe series, the revived series that invites individuals to write about their core beliefs.

It’s great for people to hear my thoughts, but it’s your site and my Birmingham, more than anything else, represents that. Continue reading
