You going to BarCamp 2?

BarCamp Birmingham 2 - story logoThis weekend there will be a lot of folks at the Innovation Depot downtown participating in Birmingham’s second ever BarCamp (April 12 information). So you may be asking, “What is BarCamp?” It is our own “un”conference. OK, you probably need a little more info.

It’s a conference where the content is provided, chosen and presented by the attendees! It’s a great way to meet members of the local technology community and it’s FREE! You can sign up to attend and learn more about the sessions that are already being proposed by checking out its website. You may also follow their Twitter feed. You may also want to take a look at some of the sessions that are being proposed, including a chance to hear about some ideas for a certain website…

Looks like we got two right…

City Stages formally announced part of their 2008 lineup via The Birmingham News as a front page article in Sunday’s (today’s) paper. This list includes a couple of big names – like Diana Ross and The Flaming Lips.

Looks like we were correct in identifying two of this year’s acts , The Roots (March 18) and Old Crow Medicine Show (yesterday). The News was able to figure out a couple of them as well (and a lot earlier than we were – see the Old Crow post to find links to those posts).

T-minus 2 hours until Earth Hour

We’re right around two hours away from the second observance of Earth Hour. We hope you’ll join us at 8 p.m. and shut down any non-essential electrical items around you.

If you need some ideas on what to do during Earth Hour 2008, try out these suggestions courtesy of the event’s website.

We’ll see you on the other side.

Grow your mustaches for the kids…

MustacheIt’s time for the Sweetest ‘Stache contest here in Birmingham. You can visit the Mustaches for Kids website to learn more about how this competition came to be and who benefits from the growth of facial hair for four weeks. Growing season in this case will be from April 1 – May 1, with a kick-off Clean Shaven Day party happening at The Bottletree on April Fool’s Day. Our effort will benefit Children’s Hospital in New Orleans.

There will be Mustache Checkpoint Days around town throughout the month at area bars (April 10, 17 & 24 @ 8 p.m.). I’m sure that we’ll get more information about the location of these events later on, though we do know that the one on the 17th will be at Rojo.

Come on, any chance to take part in a competition that includes being recognized for “beer foam retention” – when the ‘staches are judged on Thursday, May 1 @ The Bottletree – needs to be shouted from the rooftops…

The Terminally Happy Hour, The Bottletree

We’re hoping that you’re happy after filing those tax returns (and hopefully getting some refunds as well). Join us for our first monthly happy hour event at The Bottletree. We’ll be able to take over the patio and have some chips and salsa while enjoying happy hour drink specials. There may even be a new drink special for you to try out (well, maybe) while you get the chance to hang out with some of The Terminal’s staff, tell us how good (or bad) we really are to our faces and enjoy some good company.

Cost: Free (but it is happy hour after all)

Location:
The Bottletree
3719 3rd Avenue South (directions)

Ride for the Red, various locations

On April 19, the First Annual Ride For The Red Cross will be held. Motorcyclists are invited to ride on behalf of the Birmingham Area Chapter of the American Red Cross.

The scenic, two hour ride will begin at Rider’s Harley-Davidson in Trussville (4750 Norrell Drive) and end at Heart of Dixie Harley-Davidson in Pelham (333 Cahaba Valley Parkway). The ride will last for two hours. There will be new product demonstrations, food, drinks and time for motorcyclists to get to know one another. Harley clubs from around the state are expected to participate in the ride.

This event will feature a Harley Davidson Road King motorcycle giveaway. Tickets for the giveaway are $100 and only 500 will be sold giving participants a 1/500 chance of winning.

The rider fees are $25 for a single rider and $35 for a rider and passenger. For more information call 205.458.8262 or visit www.ridefortheredcross.com

Let’s call happy hour tonight – seriously!

Foosball table

One of the new initiatives that we’re planning on is a monthly happy hour at The Bottletree. Since the weather’s cleared up (mostly), and mainly because I just want to see what happens, I’m calling happy hour for… TONIGHT!!

No, this isn’t the official start, but we thought what the hell (we did mention it on our MySpace profile yesterday).

From 5 – 7 p.m. tonight, venture on over to Avondale and sit out on The Bottletree’s side patio (it’s covered) and enjoy The Terminally Happy Hour.

Right now it’s pretty quiet (but there’s foosball to be played).

If not, we’ll have a couple of announcements tomorrow morning anyway. Enjoy the ride!
