Former President Clinton campaigns for Hillary at Miles

A large crowd gathered on the campus of Miles College to hear a speech from former President Bill Clinton earlier this afternoon. It was one of two public appearances that Clinton made in support of his wife’s campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination.

McCain stumps in downtown Birmingham

More than 800 people showed up for Sen. John McCain’s appearance at the Sheraton hotel in downtown Birmingham on Saturday afternoon. He was introduced by his wife and U.S. Rep. Spencer Bachus.

After speaking for about 30 minutes, he greeted his supporters before addressing the media directly in a series of one on-ones.

Hillary Clinton recently opened a Birmingham campaign headquarters at 1614 3rd Avenue North in advance of the Democratic primaries being held on February 5 in 22 states.

Edwards to quit presidential bid at 12 p.m. CT

Looks like we may not see John Edwards this weekend afterall. He canceled his upcoming scheduled appearance here last night and there is word that the former North Carolina legislator will announce his decision to drop out of the 2008 presidential race this afternoon in New Orleans.

Edwards and McCain now planning Birmingham campaign visits

I guess they felt like they need to do it now that Obama and Huckabee have. Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards now plans to visit Birmingham, AL on Saturday, though we’re still not quite sure about when and where it will be; we’re thinking it should be up here eventually.

On the Republican side, Arizona Senator John McCain will take his turn stumping in the Magic City on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. His event will take place at the Birmingham Sheraton. We’re figuring that he’ll eventually add the date to his online campaign calendar as well.

Fresh off of his impressive win in South Carolina last night, Illinois senator and 2008 presidential hopeful Barack Obama spoke before a packed Bartow Arena earlier today. More than 8,500 people attended the event ont UAB’s campus. Obama spent nearly an hour speaking to the crowd and about 20 minutes shaking hands after his remarks.

There were about 300 people in the Jan Hollock Recital Hall and more than 700 in the Leslie S. Wright Center Concert Hall next door.
Huckabee spoke to the smaller crowd while the larger, in the over flow section, listening. Then after the first speech, he went over to the Write Hall, spoke and then shook hands afterwards.
