edcamp Birmingham is coming!

edcampbham logo. Courtesy of official websiteThere may be some that believe teachers disappear on weekends and holidays, but many of us know that not to be true (or is that assuming too much?).

It’ll be safe to say that students of metro Birmingham, AL schools will know where to find some of their teachers in mid-April. A couple of educators are working on providing an opportunity for teachers to have access to “free, democratic, participant-driven professional development.” EdCampBham will take place on April 30 at Samford University.

It is currently the only unconference of its type planned for educators in the Southeastern United States. It would certainly not be the first unconference in the city; there’s already an annual BarCamp event.

Registration for edcampbham is already open. There’s also a Twitter account for those of you interested in following the progress that way.

Samford to take down Ramsay Hall

We just received word that Samford University has announced plans to take down Ramsay Hall, the all-male residence hall that suffered a roof collapse in March of 2008, having “…reached a resolution in the insurance process.”

The announcement was made earlier this evening via an email sent by the university’s vice president for operations and planning, Dr. Sarah Latham, to students and faculty.

What do you think of Birmingham’s image?

The Birmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce wants to know. They’ve contracted with Samford University‘s Brock School of Business Marketing to do a survey of all of us so they know what we think of Birmingham’s image, in particular the city’s strengths and areas that it needs to work on. It takes three minutes to complete it (tops), (and you’ll be joining at least 400 people who’ve already completed it) so what’s keeping you from clicking here and doing it. Oh yeah, the password is bham (and you’ve only got until Friday (11.21) to complete it).

Cafeteria trays disappear at Samford, across the country

The new trend in the greening of America is the removal of trays from college cafeterias from Ohio to California). Birmingham’s own Samford University has joined in on the fun, leading to several degrees of reactions on the school’s campus. Here’s the story courtesy of the Samford Crimson. There’s also this piece (and the three pages of comments) over at Slashfood. Some food for thought (and hopefully for comments here too).

There were about 300 people in the Jan Hollock Recital Hall and more than 700 in the Leslie S. Wright Center Concert Hall next door.
Huckabee spoke to the smaller crowd while the larger, in the over flow section, listening. Then after the first speech, he went over to the Write Hall, spoke and then shook hands afterwards.

Huckabee’s visiting Birmingham too

Mike HuckabeeNot to be outdone by Senator Obama’s announcement about Sunday’s town hall meeting, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee will be visiting Birmingham on Saturday. He’ll be at Brock Hall on Samford University‘s campus; he’s scheduled to speak at 4:30 p.m.

It will be the 2008 Republican presidential candidate’s first visit to the Magic City during his campaign for president.
