A friendly reminder from your friends here at Birmingham’s hub as we approach the two-week warning for this year’s presidential election. We’ll go ahead and point you to a great website, Alabama Votes, courtesy of our Secretary of State’s office.

I’ve been in Colorado for the week but wanted to take a moment and share a few thoughts about your role in this upcoming election over on my Birmingham. I’d be interested in seeing what you think…

Two ideas for tonight’s debate

Tonight’s your last chance to hear from our 2008 presidential candidates directly as they take part in their last scheduled debate, this time from Hofstra University in New York. If you’re looking for somewhere to watch the events unfold besides sitting in your own home, we’ve had two options submitted to The Hub. One option takes you over to The Bottletree where you can watch the debate on the big screen and following it up with what promises to be an incredible performance by Leeds, England’s own The Wedding Present (with Teen Getaway and The Jealous Girlfriends opening).

You may also want to consider watching with the Birmingham Metro Area Young Democrats at Matthew’s Bar and Grill on Morris Avenue (complete with debate bingo). The main event starts at 8 p.m. and we were just wondering where you’ll be watching tonight?

Kids Got The Vote kicks off tonight

Kids Got the Vote kickoff posterIf you’ve got a chance, you may want to stop on by WorkPlay tonight starting at 8 p.m. and learn more about plans to register young people to vote in advance of the November elections. Empower Alabama is partnering with Catalyst for Birmingham and Greater Birmingham Ministries in this effort which will include shows at WorkPlay and The Bottletree. Tonight’s event will feature catering by local restaurants and entertainment by DJs Nastique and Charles III and the All That Fuss dancers.

Coincidentally, this morning’s Birmingham News reported an increase in the number of African American voters registered in a front page story, pointing to Barack Obama’s bid for president. It’ll be interesting to see how many people are registered overall by November 4, 2008.

UPDATE: The hunt for District 1’s seat may be over soon(er)

UPDATE: See end of post.

That would be based on a ruling made by the Supreme Court in Washington this morning (yes, that crew in Washington). They’ve ruled that Governor Riley did not have to get Federal approval to appoint a fellow Republican to a vacant spot on the Mobile County Commission.

Justice Ginsburg’s opinion is 38 pages long, but it is important, since it is one of the primary arguments being made concerning the Jefferson County Commission District 1 seat currently occupied by Gen. Bowman. Birmingham City Councilor William Bell won a special election called in February, leading to the current court battle over who should rightfully be occupying the seat.

We’ll see how it’s received and what’s next.

UPDATE: Seems like the Governor was already thinking about that (see the official release from his office).

You know, there’s a primary on June 3

It seems that unless the offices of governor or president are on the ballot, most people tend to stay home on Primary Day. Eight Democratic groups in the greater Birmingham metro area are hoping to make people aware of the options that will be on the ballot come June 3 and to convince them to come out and vote, most notably for them in the race for the Senate seat currently occupied by Jeff Sessions. They will be hosting a Democratic Candidate Primary Forum at the Homewood Library next Tuesday, May 20 beginning at 6:30 p.m.

We’ll be updating the destinations calendar later on today with more details (though that link to the OTM Democrats should provide enough info to get you started).

UPDATE: Election ’08: Bell wins District 1 Commission seat

While folks will no doubt spend the evening waiting to find out if their candidate has gained more electoral delegates in the closest this country has ever come to a national primary, we can go to bed knowing the outcome of at least one race in metro Birmingham.

UPDATED: These are the results as of 9:51 p.m.:

Kamau Afrika 1,195 3.84
William Bell 17,373 55.82
George “General” Bowman 4,882 15.69
Orville Ifill 1,357 4.36
Eric Major 3,176 10.20
Fred “Coach” Plump 3,139 10.09

Let’s clear up this voting confusion (or part of it)

A quick note for those of you who have not voted as of yet today…

When you arrive at your voting location, you’ll eventually be handed a ballot. When you fill the ballot out, you must:

  • Select the candidate that you’re going to vote for, and
  • Select the delegates that correspond with your candidate (e.g. if you vote for Obama, don’t vote for Edwards’ delegates). You may choose no more than 8 delegates total for your candidate (that’s 4 men and 4 women). Double check before you leave otherwise your vote may not count.

Then, relax, enjoy the warm weather, and wait for the results…
