Editor’s note: This week Birmingham Magazine associate editor Carla Jean Whitley takes the weekend planning reigns while Christina enjoys a vacation at an undisclosed location.

As Birmingham magazine’s official calendar editor, I always know what’s happening around town-often to the detriment of my budget! Last weekend wasn’t bad, with an emphasis on time outside and cooking with friends. Other times social- and entertainment-heavy weekends loom on the horizon; I’m saving now for all the cash I’ll drop with concerts, Artwalk and Muse of Fire scheduled for the first weekend of September!

But then there are weekends like the one ahead: plenty of activities to choose from that won’t break the bank.

Got plans this weekend? 6.27 – 6.29

So, if you read this column of mine regularly you have probably figured out that I like outdoor music concerts. Yes, I would like them better without the humidity and bugs, but that doesn’t keep me from going. This Friday night the music will be playing at Aldridge Botanical Gardens. Starring in this edition of their Concert in the Gardens series is Cleve Eaton and the Alabama All-Stars. The sweet sounds of jazz will start at 7:30. Cost is $10 for non-members. If you haven’t checked out Aldridge yet, it’s not a bad little spot in Hoover. Once inside, it’s very easy to forget you are in Hoover. Normally, you do not have to pay to get in.

Got plans this weekend? 6.13 – 6.15

Yea! City Stages is finally here. Oh, there are lots of folks that I’ve heard complaining about this or that. But I’m ready to enjoy the atmosphere, listen to some good music and have a much better time than the haters. I’ve made my game plan, figured what stages I need to be when — I even know what I’m eating. Here’s my Top Five must-dos for the weekend.

Lunch concert. If you work downtown, start your City Stages weekend off by eating lunch alfresco in Linn Park. This year’s Coca-Cola Unplugged Stage will feature L’Angelus, Billy Bacon and the Forbidden Pigs, and Erin McCarley. Just a little something to wet your appetite. Editor’s note: No, our special section is not quite finished (not even close actually, but at least it can help you for lunchtime.

Got plans this weekend? 6.6 – 6.8

My interest happen to be wide and varied. So are this weekend’s highlighted events.

I don’t think those who know me are one bit surprised by my like of musicals, especially Andrew Lloyd Webber. In town at the BJCC this weekend is Jesus Christ Superstar starring Ted Neeley. This is a role Ted knows very, very well because he was the first Jesus (1971 on Broadway) and has starred in most of the national tours/productions since then. Although I bet you can’t name the the 1980s rock star who took a stab at the role in 2002. This tour was originally billed as the Ted Neeley farewell tour. I’ve seen Ted a couple of time on the stage and he’s worth seeing if that is indeed true. If you can’t catch the show or feel the need to keep your love of musicals in the closest, I encourage you to rent the movie version for a great performance by my favorite Jesus. You know, besides the real guy … George Burns.

Got plans this weekend? 5.30 – 6.1

Why of course you do. There is so much happening in the Magic City this weekend. Well, that’s if you like beer, crawfish, music and/or our naked statue guy. If you don’t like any of those, you’re out of luck.

Last week I told you about outdoor concerts featuring the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. They’re at it again this weekend, first at Caldwell Park Friday night at 8 then Saturday night same time at Fort McClellan’s Longleaf Park. This weekend’s theme is fit for a movie buff as the symphony performs selections from the Harry Potter movies, Spiderman and more. I’m not typing all the details again, so go read last weekend’s column. Then come right back.

Got plans this weekend? 5.23 – 5.25

Are you listening to music? The poor guys and gals with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra are not heading to the beach. Instead they are playing TWO outdoor concerts. Join the ASO and The Temptations at Caldwell Park Friday night at 8. Beer, wine and soft drinks will be available for purchase. (FYI, law says you can’t bring your own and you can’t bring glass containers … unless you are very, very sneaky. Just don’t expect us to bail you out.) The park is located at 1116 26th St. South. Tickets are $20/students $10. Call ’em at 251-7727.

Then Saturday, the ASO takes the show on the road to Fort McClellan’s Longleaf Park. In honor of the holiday Monday, the show is patriotic in theme. Tickets at the gate are $25/ages 4-12 $5/and under 3 free. Grounds open at 6 p.m. for picnics and visiting, show starts at 8. Food and drinks will be for sale and picnic baskets/coolers encouraged. I can’t find anything on the Web site that tells you what you can’t have in that cooler, so BYOB. For more info, call (256) 310-0852.

Got plans this weekend? 5.16-5.18

FRIDAY Check out the opening reception at What’s on 2nd? for the exhibit “Lyrics of Color” by Java Lewis. Before the birth of my wonderful kid, I could frequent bars more often. At one of my favorite bars in town, Metro Bistro, I bought a few beers for Java. I like his stuff. I can’t wait to see what’s in the exhibit. The reception is from 5:30-9 p.m. You can find the store at 2306 2nd Ave. North. Tim Hollis, author of “Vintage Birmingham Signs” will also be present, ready to dedicate a book to you. Book and art will cost you, but it’s FREE to look.

This weekend it’s all about being green — 100% politically correct, counting up your carbon footprint, not just for hippies anymore GREEN. And the best way to save Mother Earth is to get the younger generation on board. In that effort, there are three (Yes, THREE) Earth Day events this weekend with the little kiddos in mind. And I promised you festivals, there’s a couple of them too. Read on and promise to plant a tree.

Got plans this weekend? 4.11 – 4.13

I love April and September. Cooler temperatures (sometimes, maybe not this week) means lots and lots of festivals. Big, small — I love ’em all.

This Friday and Saturday is the 10th Annual Lebanese Food and Cultural Festival at St. Elias Maronite Church, 836 8th St. South. Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Good food, dancing, tours of the church, did I mention the food? Follow the link to see this year’s menu. In case you’re at work, I’ll warn you that the festival website plays traditional music … but that just puts me in the mood to go hear the real thing by the band coming in from NYC. The fest is FREE but the food is not.
